Description	:	Horace’s cremated remains were not initially taken after his death. In 2015 they were claimed by a relative. In 2016, the family held a graveside memorial service and Horace Gunderson's ashes were buried in the Carl Gunderson family section of the Bluff View Cemetery in Vermillion, South Dakota. A book by David Maisel and a documentary by Ondi Timoner & Robert James, both entitled "Library of Dust" also provide more information. His parents were Hans Gunderson, a farmer, and "Isabel" Ingeborg Johannsdatter (both Norwegian immigrants). He was born in 1832 and she was born in 1835. They immigrated to the US in 1851 and became citizens. Horace had 7 siblings with 6 being alive in 1910. Among those siblings were Gustave born in Wisconsin about 1860. The others were born in the Dakota Territory and included John (born in 1861), Carl (in 1864), Clara (about 1869), Esther (about 1876) and William (in 1874). During the census of 1870, Horace was 3 years old and lived with his parents and 4 siblings near Vermillion. At the time of the 1880 census, Horace was 13 and living with his family in Clay County where he was attending school. His father was a miller. Horace left South Dakota for Nebraska before 1889. In 1889 in Nebraska when Horace was 21 years old he married Nellie M. White. She was born about 1874 in Kansas. They had 3 children and 2 of them survived childhood; both were born in Nebraska. They were Nellie May born in 1890 and Guy Lawrence born in 1893. By 1900 Horace’s parents were living with his brother William in South Dakota. His father died there in 1913 and his mother died in 1931. In 1900 Horace was working in a sawmill in Kalispell, Flathead County, Montana. He was a lodger in a small lodging house in which all the other lodgers were also sawmill laborers. Horace was reportedly married, but his wife and children were not living with him at that time. Nellie was living in Valentine, Cherry County, Nebraska, working as a servant. The children, who would have been 7 and 10, were not living with her either. Horace and Nellie divorced before 1914. On 1/16/1914 Horace married Anna J. Bostwick in Spokane, Spokane County in eastern Washington. Anna was born in Wisconsin about 1863. At the time of the 1920 census and during the early 1920s Horace and Anna lived in Spokane. He was working as a filer in a sawmill. His first wife, Nellie, died in Canada in 1918. Horace married Nancy Ann (Reed) Conway who was born in Iowa in 1874. In the 1930 census, Horace and Nancy were living in Rogue River, Jackson County in southern Oregon. Horace was a saw filer in the lumber industry. With them was Nancy’s 14 year old son Thomas H. Conway who born in Oregon. On 4/23/1936, Horace was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. He was diagnosed to have senility and general paresis, also known as general paralysis of the insane or paralytic dementia. This condition is a neuro-psychiatric disorder affecting the brain, caused by late-stage syphilis. It is characterized by dementia, progressive muscular weakness, and paralysis. He died of broncho-pneumonia at the institution on 9/1/ 1936. Prior to entering the asylum he lived in Talent, Jackson County, Oregon. In 1935 Nancy was living in Grants Pass, Josephine County, Oregon and in 1940 was listed as a widow. She died in Lake County, Oregon in 1948 of a stroke. Son Guy died in 1953, and daughter Nellie died in 1983.
