Description	:	Stratford Courier October 26, 1893 OBITUARY Horatio Edwin Hook, died on Thursday night October 19th, 1893, after a sickness of about eight months. He was born in this county the 29th day of October 1872, his parents at that time living on a farm. Had he lived till Sunday, October 29th, he would have been 21 years old. Read More	Stratford Courier October 26, 1893 OBITUARY Horatio Edwin Hook, died on Thursday night October 19th, 1893, after a sickness of about eight months. He was born in this county the 29th day of October 1872, his parents at that time living on a farm. Had he lived till Sunday, October 29th, he would have been 21 years old. When about nine years of age his parents moved to this town, where his father (G.W. Hook) for many years conducted a general store. He was with his father, helping him in the store until the time he left to attend the college at Ames where his industrious nature manifested itself to such a degree that he was advanced one year ahead of the regular course, so that the at the time of his death, was within one year of graduating, being a member of the class of '94. He was a young man of most excellent character, self-sacrificing and without a bad habit, and, as testified by those who knew him, these traits of character were the same away from home as well as when at home. He was a member of the Young Men's Christian Association of Ames. The funeral services which were largely attended, were held at the M.E. Church, Sunday morning and were conducted by the pastor C.F. Johnson. A number of beautiful floral pieces were contributed by loving friends as a last token of esteem. A very beautiful one was sent by his class which was represented by Messers B.D. Reed of Coon Rapids, Iowa; S.D. Bowie, of Byron, Illinois; S.R. Fitz, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa; A.W. Stuntz, of Marshalltown, Iowa; and A.W. Hoyt, of Ida Grove, Iowa, who were all present except Mr. Reed, who was thrown from the train at Ames while attempting to board it after it started. John Shaeffer of this place acted as substitute and the class carried the remains of their friend to its last place of rest. He leaves to mourn their loss, besides a large number of friends and relatives, father, mother, a brother and a sister. For a young man such as he in the best of years, and humanly seeing having a bright future before him, to be called to leave this world seems hard indeed, but it is one of the mysteries which we cannot nnow understand, but which the all wise Father, "who doeth all things well" holds in his hand. We cannot and do not but willingly abide by his bidding, and as a comforter for those who mourn, we recommend him who said, "I will come to you" and "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee." The following resolutions were adopted at the late meeting of the Junior class at the Iowa Agricultural College: "There is a Reaper whose name is Death, All with his sickle kern He reaps the bearded grain at a breath And the flowers that grow between." WHEREAS, This reaper has again entered our midst and we have been called upon to part with our beloved friend and fellow student, Horatio E. Hook, a faithful and efficient member of our class, who has endeared himself to us by the nobleness and purity of his character; there for be it RESOLVED. That although called so young while his life gave such bright promise, yet we recognized in him an example worthy of imitation; and while we are stricken with sorrow by the loss we are comforted in the hope that he has gone to that higher school where he no longer needs our protection, "And Christ himself doth rule," and be it further RESOLVED. That the members of class of '94 extend their heartfelt sympathy to bereaved parents and friends, adding the consoling words of the poet; There is no heart so full of grief, But asleep and time may bring relief, No hear of pain so sad and long, But God may end it with a song.
