Mrs. Newsome died very suddenly, according to information received here, following a stroke of paralysis. Stratford Courier July 17, 1930 Mrs. Mary Newsome Mary McKinney was born in Lee County, Iowa, April 29, 1849, and died at the family home of her nephew, Herbert O. Hyatt, at Lamoille, July 9, 1930, at the age of 81 years, 2 months, 10 days. She came with her parents to Hamilton County at the age of 4 years and they settled at what was long known as "Hook's Point." She had lived in this community all the rest of her life with the exception of the last three years. In 1871, she was united in marriage to George W. Hook, of Stratford, who died in 1904. To this union four children were born: Horatio, Alma, Della and Clyde, all of whom preceded their mother in death. In 1912, she was married to William H. Newsome, of Homer, and he also preceded her in death, passing away Feb. 15, 1927. Mrs. Newsome was from early childhood a member of the Methodist church in Stratford and was very faithful in her attendance. She taught in the Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Aid Society. For two years after the death of Mr. Newsome she made her home with a sister, Mrs. L.E. Sanford, of Sioux City, and the past year had made her home with her nephew. He death marks the passing of another of the pioneers of this community and also of one of the loyal and faithful members of the Methodist church. Because of the repairs being made at the Methodist church, funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church by Rev. C.R. Yeager, pastor of the M.E. church. The hymns were sung by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. L.M. Peterson, Miss Minnie Williams, A.T. Johnson and L.M. Peterson. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, north of Stratford.
