Visitation will be at Knox-Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island, from 1 to 3 p.m. today, followed by a service at 3 p.m. He will be buried at Plymouth, Iowa, on Monday. Dr. Holroyd was born on Sept. 29, 1900, in Plymouth, Iowa, to Albert Marcus Holroyd and Addie Julia Holroyd. He married Donna Norton Dec. 22, 1956, in Rock Island. She died Aug. 2, 1992. He was distantly related to both Daniel Webster and former Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice O.A. Byington. Holroyd graduated from Iowa State College (now University) in 1924, where he studied mechanical engineering and was elected to Phi Kappa Phi. From there, he pursued graduate study at the Westinghouse Mechanical Design and Engineering School, and in 1929 received his Ph.D. with honors from California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he was elected to Sigma Xi. His teaching career began with a one-year appointment at Caltech, which he completed in 1930. Dr. Holroyd also taught on the faculties of Bucknell University, the Curtiss-Wright Technical Institute and Iowa State College. Outside of higher education, Holroyd worked for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation and served as an ordnance engineer at the Rock Island Arsenal, during WW II. Dr. Holroyd came to Augustana in 1957 as chair of the physics department and he retired in 1964. Dr. Frank, who retired in 1992, remembered Holroyd as ``very well trained engineer who had strong opinions on various aspects of engineering.'' Augustana College Chaplain Richard Swanson described Holroyd as a gentle, kind person. ``Howard Holroyd was a man who treasured the intellect. He loved conversations about philosophy, theology, economics and politics. He was always ready to explore new ideas, while always maintaining his own closely held values concerning family and faith. His late wife, Donna, also loved the life of the mind,'' Swanson said. He was past president of Q.C. Camera Club; a member of Blackhawk Gem and Mineral Society; Kiwanis Club; and Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island. Always the scholar with wide interests especially economics, Dr. Holroyd also collaborated with his wife, Donna, a long-time elementary teacher in the Rock Island schools, in developing new methods of teaching mathematics to children. He was also a talented photographer, lover of the outdoors and a working lapidary with a large collection of beautiful rocks. Survivors include a niece, Phyllis Jagusiak, Berkley, Calif.; and a nephew, Albert Packer, Granville, Ohio.
