Description	:	Howard Daniel Thies was born Sept. 28, 1908 in Lake Benton, MN, to Louis and Freelove (Eastman) Thies. He attended school in Minnesota before the family moved to the Waukon area where the attended Jefferson Township rural schools. He married Della Invick Palmer in 1933. She died in 1970. Jan. 29, 1972 he married Eula Roffman at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon. He was a member of First Presbyterian. Howard worked as a farmer and also ground feed for area farmers. For many years, he was a mechanic at Allamakee Community School's bus barn. He died Monday, March 8, 1999 at the Good Samaritan Center. Howard was 90. Surviving are his wife, a son Allan and his wife Jan of Red Wing, MN; two step-daughters, Dorothy and husband Fred Broszeit of Postville and Alice and husband Donald Hager of Waukon; a step-son and his wife Leo and Donna Nagel of Decorah, two grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, 21 step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild. Other survivors are two sisters, Florence Hennessey and Emma Miene, both of Waukon, and three brothers and their wives, Leonard and Bernice, and Frank and Arlene, all of Waukon, and Elmer and Helen of Galena, IL. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Minerva Fink, a brother Louis, and a grandson. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Mar 11 at 11 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. Casket bearers are Jack and Al Hager, Jerry Daugherty, Robert Smith, Randy Nagel and Darcy Broszeit. Waukon Standard 10 Mar 1999
