Deischer Dies Suddenly, Railroad Man Is Taken At Hospital Howard E. Deischer, life-long resident of Jones County and graduate of the Monticello high school; died Thursday at the age of 67 years, after a short illness and confinement in the John McDonald hospital. Mr. Deischer was born in Jones county and spent his boyhood on the family farm in Castle Grove township. He attended the public schools and was graduated from the Monticello high school. He spent two years in Cornell college, but ill health prevented his graduation. After leaving Cornell, Mr. Deischer taught in Jones county schools for two years. He was married to Mary Alice Pfeil on March 14, 1900. The couple established their home on a farm in Castle Grove township and remained on the farm until 1905. He was employed by the Milwaukee railroad in 1907, and remained with the company until his death. His first service was on the Davenport-Monticello branch. Later he transferred to Marion and served on the Chicago-Marion division. Following the Chicago period, he was changed to the Marion-Omaha division, where he served until a few days before his death. When the new Hiawatha trains were put in to service, he was given preference as a member of one of the crews because of his long and faithful service to the road. Mr. Deischer was a member of the Methodist church, and a member of the church board of trustees. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity since 1917, and graduated to the office of Master, by reason of his efficiency in ritual and traditions of Masonry, He became district lecturer for the organization in 1923. He made his last run on the Milwaukee on Saturday, January 18. On Sunday, the 19th, he complained of disability to move his right arm. Gradually paralysis claimed his right side. He was taken to the John McDonald hospital, where he died the following Thursday. Besides his wife, the survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Edith Uffleman of Platteville, Wisc; a son. Merle of Hot Springs, S. Dak,; a brother, Newton Deischer of Monticello, and several nieces and nephews.
