Howard, son of Alfred and Annie (Ramsey) Hansen, was born April 29, 1914 in Bruce, South Dakota. He spent his early years on the family farm and attended school in rural Hamlin County near Castlewood, South Dakota. He was baptized in Lake Norden Mission Covenant Church on October 30, 1919. Howard worked for Taken Repair in Castlewood before traveling to Seattle, Washington to stay with his brother Alvin and sister Lillian while helping with the war efforts. He worked as a welder on several Naval Destroyers at the Seattle-Tacoma Shipyards in Seattle, earning several awards for his welding skills and being promoted to manage of a crew. Having struck up a relationship with Anne Freeseman before his trip to the West Coast, she came to visit and they were married on February 1, 1942. After the war, they returned to South Dakota where he found a job at the Chevrolet Garage in Hayti. They later built a house in Hayti and have resided there since then. After the Chevrolet Garage fire, Howard started Hansen Repair Shop in 1960. He worked at his shop providing welding and auto repair service to the community for the next forty years until the loss of his eye sight caused him to retire. Howard was an active member of the Hayti Lutheran Church serving in many office positions. He loved to travel and to visit with family and friends. He and Anne would take yearly trips to the East or West Coast. They would love to stop and see friends and bring them up to date information on all the happenings with the family and Hayti community and to also pick up information to bring back home with them. Howard is survived by is wife, Anne of Hayti, South Dakota; one son, Larry Hansen of Hayti, South Dakota; one daughter, Diane and her husband, Mark Hogan of Fallon, Nevada; two sisters, Lillian Bakken of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Gladyce Swenson of Albany, Oregon; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister.
