McCandlish, J.F. Thompson, J.C. Shaw, C.D. Welty, W.A. Lauffer, G.E. Turner; honorary Isaac Rowles, John A. Sanderson, John Moyer, Geo. Everett, Frank Everett, Ed Hull, E.B. Conner, F.P. Latimer, W.C. Johnston, Ray Johnston, C.E. Beery, of Lancaster, G.W. Baldwin, C.W. Seifert, Phillip Schmeltzer, and Ross Householder. The choir sang "Lead, Kindly Light" and "Somewhere the Sun Is Shining" two favorite hymns of Mr. Shelhamer's. The body of Mr. Shelhamer arrived in Bremen Monday evening from his home in Florida and was taken to his Bremen home on Walnut St. Services were conducted also at Winter Haven, Florida, on Saturday, April the 15th, at 4 o'clock, by Rev. W.D. Harrell, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Lake Alfred and assisted by Dr. R.A. Nichols pastor of the Christian church. This service was attended by a large group of friends and was held in the Ware Funeral Home in Winter Haven. Among friends from a distance attending the services in Bremen were the following: Geo. Black of Chicago, brother of Mrs. Shelhamer, Mrs. Frank Houser, Earl Houser, Marion, Frank Raymond, Columbus; Mr. & Mrs. B.H. Frasch, Newark; Mr & Mrs. W.D. Williams, Mr & Mrs. H.S. Kates, Richmond, Ind; Mr & Mrs. Harold Nessly, Kirkesville, Mr. & Mrs. W.H. Lane, Newark; Palmer Howard, Buckeye Lake, William Rindfoos, Columbus, Mrs. Robert McCandlish, Rushville, Mr & Mrs. Herman Dresbach, Hallsville; Judge F.P. Martin, Mr. & Mrs. Virgil Martin, Logan; Mr & Mrs. Wm. Ulm, Mrs. Mary Leist, Circleville, Mr & Mrs. H.D. Armstrong, Franfort, Ind.; Banner Friend, Stanley M. From a land of sunshine and flowers to that of everlasting light and beauty, on April 12, 1933, there fled the spirit of one to whom Bremen and community owes a great debt of gratitude and profoundest respect. Howard M. Shelhamer, son of Elias and Margaret Shelhamer was born near Bremen, Ohio, May 1, 1860 and was called from life at his winter home in Lake Alfred, Florida having served his fellow man for more than 72 years. Mr. Shelhamer has been identified with the progress and welfare of this community during his entire active life. Wherever there was opportunity for improvement or any worthy cause that needed assistance our friend and counselor could ever be depended on. Early in life he became a member of the Presbyterian Church has come first in his thought, time, and attention. The building in which this memorial service is held stands as a monument to his zeal for his church his love for the beautiful. He has been honored by his church with various positions of responsibility among which was that of being chosen commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. Had he lived he would have likely been again chosen this Spring to the same position of responsibility. He only recently was elected Elder for life. With his passing, a pillar must needs be replaced. He admired the beautiful and labored continuously until the Death Angel called that others might enjoy the handiwork of God in nature. The beautiful surroundings of his late homes; Grandview cemetery, to which he gave unstintingly so much of his time and attentions, all attest to this fact. It seemed so fitting and in harmony with his life that his last work should be done among the flowers and shrubs of his home. He likewise gave much of his attention to the civic improvement of Bremen. Our modern water supply, sewer system and paved streets were envisaged by Mr. Shelhamer and through many trials and great perseverance they became actualities. From a business standpoint he was long known as one of the outstanding merchants in this part of the state, having operated a general store in Bremen for more than 30 years. His courtesy, willingness to accomodate and keeping abreast of the times, won for him the admiration and satisfaction of a large patronage. In 1897 he organized Bremen's first financial institution which has enjoyed the confidence and respect of this community continuously for thirty-six years. Throughout this time he has served as its President with great credit to himself and satisfaction of all concerned. The Bremen Bank building is one of several structures in this town which will serve to perpetuate his memory as a builder. In his early manhood he was married to Miss Emma Stuart only soon to lose her with their young son, Roy as they passed to the Great Beyond. He later was married to Miss Isabel Black who survives him and cherishes the blessed memory of many happy years spent together in their christian home. Mr. Shelhamer loved his home as witnessed not only by the lovely words inscribed on the mantel piece above the hearth stone of his home but in his heart as well, "East-West Homes Best". He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Martha Larimer of Bremen, who is the last survivor of the known Shelhamer family. With deepest reverence we commit to Mother Earth the body of one who has given his best for all things good and with the hope that those who follow will carry on.
