Had Been a Resident of Chouteau County Forty-Eight Years Howard Meeks, Sr., a resident of Chouteau county and Fort Benton for 48 years, passed away at the St. Clare hospital in this city at 6:15 Monday evening following an extended illness. He had been in the local hospital for the past number of weeks but had been in poor health for the past three or four years. Howard Meeks was born at Uniondale, Indiana, on Oct. 31, 1886, where he spent his early life and where he grew up on a farm of his parents. He graduated from high school there and assisted with the farm work until he came to Montana in 1910, homesteading in Pleasant Valley, where he resided until retiring from farming, due to poor health, and moving to Fort Benton in April 1944, where they have since resided. Mr. Meeks was united in marriage to Elizabeth L. Osborn, who also homesteaded in the valley, on Sept. 6, 1914, at the Methodist church in this city. After homesteading he drove stage for six months from Big Sandy to the Judith ferry; served for six months on one of the government snag boats operating on the upper Missouri. He served as one of the census enumerators in 1920, 1930 and 1940, spending some time each decade in this work. He served for several years on the school board and with the reclassification work in the assessor's office here. He was one of the original stockholders of the Farmers Elevator here, after moving to Fort Benton he drove one of the school buses for several years. He was appointed justice of peace for this township in 1945 and had since been elected each two years. He resigned that position in May 1958, because of poor health. He also served for a number of years as police magistrate of Fort Benton, being elected each election year. Mr. Meeks was a member of the Fort Benton Kiwanis club and had served as a member of the house and attendance committee for a number of years; he had an 11-year perfect attendance record in the club, and attended several state and, we believe, one national convention of the organization. Mr. Meeks is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Charles Dixon, of Big Sandy; three sons, William A. Meeks, who farms the home place, and Howard, Jr., both of this city; and Archie Meeks, of Empire, Nevada; one daughter, Lail, passed away in infancy. He is survived by one brother, Otto C. Meeks, of Banning, Calif.; and two sisters, Belle Lesh, Indianapolis, and Gladys Thompson, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held from the Benton Funeral Home chapel on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Wendell P. Tomlin, pastor of the First Methodist church. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. The relatives have the sympathy of all in their bereavement, and in his passing Fort Benton and Chouteau county have lost another splendid citizen, a good neighbor and friend.
