Military honors will be presented by Burton-Beyer American Legion Post 120 of Palmer. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 PM Sunday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul and from 11 AM until service time Monday at the church in Palmer. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice. Mr. Mickelsen was born March 28, 1936, at St. Paul to Clarence and Annie (Bennett) Mickelsen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Mickelsen, in 1988. Survivors of the immediate family include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Daniel and Kellie Mickelsen of York and Richard Mickelsen of Seattle; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gaylord and Judy Mickelsen, Lyle and Arlene Knott, all of Grand Island; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Alice Mickelsen and Arlene and Alvin Wagner, all of Grand Island. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Aric, Aaron and Alyssa Mickelsen, all of York. Howard was raised in Dannebrog, where he was baptized and confirmed. He attended Dannebrog schools, where he graduated from Dannebrog High School in 1955. That same year he enlisted n the US Air Force where he served in southern Louisiana. He received his discharge in 1959. He was united in marriage to Eva Mary Bordelon on Sept 30, 1958 in Avoyelles Parish, La. after his discharge from the Air Force, Howard and Eva moved to Palmer, where Howard began working for S A. Foster Lumber Co. He worked at Foster Lumber for 30 years, including the past 15 years as manager. He retired from full-time work but worked for Knott's Auction in Grand Island and then part time for Sears in Grand Island when he fully retired. Howard loved to be involved with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed living, working and being a part of the Palmer community. He was active in the United Methodist Church in Palmer and liked to help people. Because of his enjoyment of being a part of the community and his helping nature, he will be missed. Howard was a member of the United Methodist church and the Methodist Men of Palmer, the Burton-Beyer American Legion Post 120 of Palmer and was a member of the Palmer Fire Department for 25 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eva, who died in 1988; a brother, Clarence Mickelsen, Jr.; two sisters, Lillian Thompson and Doris Butler; and a special friend, Evelyn Peetz.
