Description	:	In 1860, he was a farmer living in Menallen Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 3" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.The son of George & Hannah Bender. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Bendersville, Adams County, August 14, 1862. But when he took the physical examination, the surgeons pronounced him too short for the army. He protested and they decided to take him because he had a good physique, and he mustered in Harrisburg August 22 with Co. G, 138th Pennsylvania Infantry, at the rank of private. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Bendersville, Adams County, August 14, 1862. But when he took the physical examination, the surgeons pronounced him too short for the army. Alas, on March 25, 1864, he transferred to 10th Veteran Reserve (Invalid) Corps and was honorably discharged by general order on June 27, 1865. He moved to Kansas c. 1872. The information was given to me by Dennis Brandt. He married Anna R. McKimm July 16, 1868, in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Nora Alberta (b. 10/11/69), John William (b. @1871), Harry B. (b. @1874), and Mary Grace (b. 05/27/79 - married Jesse Aker). On April 20, he was admitted to Armory Square U.S. Hospital, Washington DC, for treatment of typhoid fever, then furloughed, re-admitted June 1, furloughed again, and re-admitted a second time November 16. On March 25, 1865, he transferred to Co. H, 10th Veteran Reserve Corps, forwarded to Washington's Cliffburn Barracks Convalescent Camp, and discharged from there by surgeon's certificate per general order June 27, 1865.
