Howard Connors was born July 12, 1917, in Jefferson, SD to Edward and Rose (Sheehan) Connors. He attended St. Peter's elementary school in Jefferson, and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1934. Howard attended Southern State College in Springfield, SD and graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1938. A math major at USD, he also participated in basketball, football and baseball. He later earned his Masters Degree in mathematics, also at USD. Howard was united in marriage with Margaret Mary Schmitz on May 21, 1940, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson, SD. The wedding was held early in the morning to allow his students and fellow teachers to attend before school. Margaret and Howard were married for nearly 65 years and remained always a devoted couple. In Margaret's last years, Howard served as her loving caretaker and inspired all around him with his faithful dedication to "his beautiful wife." Howard taught mathematics and coached at Jefferson High School from 1938 to 1941 and at Vermillion High School from 1941 to 1943, where he also served as principal. His teaching career was interrupted by World War II. In 1944, Howard entered the US Navy and completed the officer training program at Harvard University. He served in the Pacific on the USS Arctic as the ship's chief petty officer until 1946. On his return to Vermillion, Howard joined the mathematics faculty at the University of South Dakota. He was affiliated with USD for the rest of his career, teaching mathematics for nearly 40 years, and coaching football, basketball, track and baseball. He served as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and was Dean of Men for twelve years. Among Howard's many honors at USD were several "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" awards. He advised many student groups on campus, including Pi Mu Epsilon, the honorary national mathematics society. Howard was a respected mentor to countless USD students and a lifelong supporter of the University. Howard played three seasons of professional baseball (1938-40) as an outfielder for the Sioux Falls Canaries. In 1939, Howard was the batting champion of the Western League with a batting average of .365. One of the highlights of Howard's baseball career was meeting Babe Ruth, who appeared in exhibition at a Canaries game, and being photographed with "The Babe." Howard was named the right fielder for South Dakota's All-Century baseball team. He was inducted into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame, the Coyote Sports Hall of Fame, the North Central Conference Hall of Fame and the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame. Howard officiated high school and college football for 40 seasons, basketball for 36 seasons, and track for 50 seasons. He organized, trained and evaluated officials throughout the region. Howard officiated in the North Central Conference, the Big 12 Conference, and enjoyed officiating many junior and senior high school games for area students. He was the first official elected to the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Shrine. Howard enjoyed golf all of his life, and organized Vermillion's Senior Golfers for many years. He faithfully submitted their weekly playing highlights to the local paper, and was proud of the many times he could report that the enthusiastic Senior Golfers managed to play golf in Vermillion in eleven or even twelve months of the year. Howard was an active member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, and led the Vermillion Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Vermillion Hospital Board of Directors, and many other community organizations. Howard and Margaret enjoyed their monthly bridge club with life-long friends for over 50 years. Survivors include his children: Mary Ann Zimmerman (James) of Iowa City, IA; Marjorie Connors-Boe (Gary) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Robert Connors (Julie) of Grand Rapids, MI; Catherine Gullickson (Marcus) of Cedar Rapids, IA; and Carla Connors (Timothy Hoekman) of Tallahassee, FL; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Rosemary Doescher of Maple Grove, MN; Lois Hanson of Portland, OR; and Margaret Ann (Jerry) Marley of South Bend, IN; and one brother, Edward (Carolyn Roberts) of Green Valley, AZ. Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Patricia Rose; and his parents. Services will be held Tuesday, March 6, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion, with burial to follow in the Calvary Cemetery. The Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion is handling the arrangements.
