Body Recovered Below Fort Benton on Sunday Morning Graveside services for Hubert Paradis, 67, were held at Riverside cemetery Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. with Fr. Geisen of the local Catholic church officiating. Mr. Paradis drowned April 21st when the Carter ferry, which he was operating, sank and he was washed down river. The initial search for the body was not successful. Sunday morning about 11 a.m., a search party located the body in a back water about ten miles downstream from here. It was taken by boat as far as the Loma ferry and brought to Fort Benton. Leo Getts, of this city, searched the river by plane and many other volunteer searchers helped in trying to locate the body following the drowning. Hubert Paradis was born Sept. 9, 1884, in Minnesota. He came to Fort Benton and Chouteau county in 1911 and homesteaded in this county. For the past number of years he had been employed by the county, serving as ferryman on occasion in recent years and as ferryman at Carter this spring. The Missouri river is swift at the point of the accident, and heavy clothes Mr. Paradis was wearing contributed to the drowning. Survivors include brother, Fred Paradis, at St. Paul, Minn.; and four sisters, Mrs. Leo Lebeau, Marshall, Minn., Mrs. Patrick St. Peter and Mrs. Emil Breault, Fort Benton, and Mrs. Levi St. Peter, Highwood; and a daughter, Mrs. J. D. Crowley, in California. Mr. Paradis was well known in this section of the county and relatives have they sympathy of friends in their tragic loss. --- 1920 Census - wife-Ermine children - Ermine & Earl --- Sheriff Cancels Search for Drowning Victim Fort Benton, Apr. 22--Choteau County Sheriff, John Bradley said today he has given up the search for Hubert Paradis, 72 year old Carter Ferry operator who drowned when a boat sank during a Missouri river crossing yesterday. "The river is too high to conduct a search without endangering men's lives, Bradley said. "We expect the body will rise within two weeks." Bradley said the one inch steel cable snapped "just before or after the boat began to sink at about 3 p.m. Monday." Paradise was taking Lyle Murrow, 32, driver of a loaded wheat truck. across the river. They were about halfway across when the one-car, county-owned ferry and loaded truck sank. Murrow jumped clear of the craft but was unable to reach Paradis. The sheriff said Paradis floated down the river about 100 yards and disappeared. A search party headed by Bradley searched the river late yesterday. Surviving Paradise are his widow; a daughter and two step-children in California, one brother in St. Paul, and four sisters, two in Fort Benton, one in Highwood, and one in Marshall, Minnesota.
