WAS BORN IN IRELAND Came to This Country When a Lad of Thirteen and Had Lived Here Many Years. Hugh Copeland, another of the old and respected citizens of Keokuk, died, after a long period of failing health, at his home, 609 Orleans street, at about 10 o’clock last night. Mr. Copeland was born in County Down, Ireland, September 16, 1839, and came to this country with his parents when about thirteen years of age. The place of their first location is not remembered, but later the father purchased a farm in Illinois, near Basco, where the family resided. Mr. Copeland after growing into young manhood, came to Keokuk to reside, and in 1864 was married to Miss Elizabeth Martin, daughter of the late William G. Martin, in partnership with him. Mr. Copeland was engaged for a time in the queensware business. For a number of years, over twenty, perhaps, he was in the ice business here, and was among the pioneer ice dealers in the city who delivered that commodity by wagons. To many men and women in Keokuk who, were born here, the ice delivery wagons of Copeland are among their marked recollections. His first wife died December 8, 1901, and March 25, 1903, he was married a second time to Mrs. Rachel Russell of Chicago, a lady of amiability and refinement who survives him with three stepchildren, Richard Russell of Chicago, Mrs. Raymond Majors of Springfield, Ill., and Miss Ethel Russell of Keokuk. Mr. Copeland retired from active business about twenty-two years ago. A few years ago, he suffered a slight stroke of paralysis, since which time his physical condition had been on the decline. Recently he was in a local hospital for several weeks and going to Illinois for anticipated relief, he was taken with a relapse and for a time his life as despaired of. Regaining some of his lost strength he continued to maintain hope, but recently he was again confined to his bed from which he was never released. Hugh Copeland was a good man. Modest and unassuming, yet he won his way into the respect and friendship of a large number of people in Keokuk and vicinity. Perhaps he was known to more people in this community than any other citizen of the city, and everybody who knew him respected and honored him for his noble manly qualities and strict integrity. He had been for years an active member of the United Presbyterian church and for many years past an honored elder in that organization, a position he held at the time of his death. McElree of the United Presbyterian church. The pallbearers selected are George Majors, James Anderson, Dean Fry, Frank Krauth, Thomas Russell and A. M. Davidson. Yesterday afternoon in the announcement of the death of Mr. Copeland, a partial mention of the surviving relatives was given, and today has been furnished an additional list of surviving relatives as follows: Nieces, Mrs. Minnie Fry and Mrs. Sadie Krauth of Basco, Ill.; Mrs. Thomas Russell, Keokuk; Mrs. Minnie Scott, Fremont, Neb.; Mrs. Ralph Hahm, Belden, Neb. Nephews, George Majors, Denver, Ill., and Hugh Copeland, Fremont, Neb. Brother, Thomas Copeland, Fremont, Neb. There will no doubt be a large number of his old friends and associates present to pay a last tribute of heartfelt respect to this old and highly respected citizen.
