The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, August 10, 1944 ======================== Services were held here Sunday afternoon for T-5 Hugh Frank Ruttman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ruttman, killed in action in Lessey, France, July 28, 1944, and recently returned to the United States aboard an army transport for re-interment here. Rev. C.M. Foust of Chester had charge of the service in Klawitter Chapel at 2:30 o'clock, with the Nelson American Legion Post conducting graveside military rites. Hugh was born August 25th, 1922. He was educated in the Nelson schools from which he was a graduate in 1940. He was married to Bettie Jane Nelson May 22, 1943, at Grand Island. Inducted into the Army December 7, 1942, he reported for active duty three weeks later. On March 28th, 1944, he was sent to the Port of Embarkation at Camp Miles Standish, Massachusetts, from which point he embarked for England. After three months spent there he was shipped to France and it was here while on a reconnaissance tour in the Normandy peninsula that he gave his life for his country. A memorial service was held at the Christian church in Angus on Sunday, August 13, 1944, conducted by Rev. C.M. Foust. Surviving him are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Ruttman of Nelson; two brothers, Howard of Torrington, Wyoming, and Harold at Nelson; and a sister, Helen, of Omaha; several nieces and nephews. Howard was unable to be here for Sunday's services.
