FIVE PERSONS DROWNED "Three Men and Two Women Find Watery Graves in Lake Erie, Sunday Afternoon On Sunday afternoon last, Charles Barnes, Hugh Hooper, Fred White and the two Misses Hooper, one aged 18 and the other 20, started from this place in an 18 foot boat headed for Pelee Island. The lake was quite rough at the time and the party was warned of the danger of going out in such a gale, but did not heed the warning. Young __?__ and Carl Kaufman left at the same time in another boat. Both lads weathered the gale without accident until the boat containing the Hooper party was within probably three miles of the island, when Carl who was about landing lost sight of it. He noticed for some time previous to this that the frail craft was being tossed wildly about, but he could not go to their assistance because the waves were running so high that he had all he could do to effect a landing. On Monday morning as the little fishing steamer, “Louise” of Sandusky was passing up the lake she picked up a small boat containing a man entangled in its rigging. She took the boat to the island where it was identified as the boat in which the Hooper party left Kingsville, and the drowned man in it was Chas. Barnes. Of the persons drowned three were children of Mrs. Hooper of this town. Hugh Hooper was married and leaves a wife and two young children on the island. Fred White and Charles Barnes were cousins and unmarried. White being a brother-in-law of Hugh Hooper. The men all lived on the island and had come over to take the Misses Hoopers back with them to the island for a few weeks. As the boat was so near the island when swamped, it is thought that the bodies may be carried out through the gap past Point Pelee, and may never be found. The accident is one of the most deplorable that has happened here for years and expressions of sympathy for the bereaved are heard on all sides." (Courtesy #49300908)
