Description	:	Hugh Roney was born in Dromore, New Castle, Down, Ireland in about 1809 and came to Ireland with his parents, Hugh Roney, Sr. and Mary. He married Joanna Cahill (dau of Daniel Cahill and Catherine Walsh) on 6 Jun 1847 in Jennings, IN. Jean (Groff) Chandonia related the story she had heard of Hugh and Joanna's meeting. "Joanna was in a convent in Madison, Indiana, studying to be a nun when Hugh Roney/Rooney, Jr. saw her in church, went to the pastor to speak to her father for him, because that was the lady he wanted to marry! So Joanna's father took Joanna out of the convent, and she was married to Hugh Jr." Jean has not been able to document Joanna's studying to be a nun (archives of the Sisters of Province), however she most likely did attend the school the Sisters established in Madison IN. Hugh and his wife had 13 children, only five sons lived (source Roney Family History and Genealogy by Doris Roney Bowers). The Bowers book indicates Hugh died 6 March 1894--Inez Roney Groff's personal papers list 26 March 1894--she submitted the original work for the book. There is further confusion about the date of Hugh's death in that one of Joanna's obituaries lists his date of death as 26 March 1904, although no records of such are available from the Indiana State Department of Health. The tombstone that Inez Grof had erected is engraved with the 1894 date. Indiana death records are not available prior to 1899 and he could not be located in the 1900 IN census. We've not been able to locate Hugh Jr.'s immigration records or naturalization papers. Hugh's last name was spelled Roney when land was purchased in Morgan Co. IN in 1838 and on his marriage license to wed Joanna.
