Mrs. Thompson had been shot once in the middle of the chest with a 22 caliber automatic pistol, which police have in their possession, authorities said. NO CHARGES have been filed against Thompson, police said. Authorities said today Thompson claims his wife accidentally shot herself after an argument. Officials reports indicate police were summoned after Thompson went to a neighbor’s home after the incident. When police arrived,Thompson was found kneeling beside his wife, who was slumped on her side in the dining room doorway in the home, authorities said. Police indicated they found one spent cartridge on the floor. Eight unfired cartridges were still in the weapon, authorities said. An autopsy was performed Monday night at Knox-Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island, according to James Shaw, Rock Island County coroner. SHAW SAID no date has been set for an inquest. Visitation begins at noon Wednesday at Knox-Larson Funeral Home. Mrs. Thompson was employed at the Rock Island Tobacco Company since March. Ilene Lamb was born in Eckley, Colorado. She married Guy Eutsler in 1953. She latter married Mr. Thompson last November 21, 1970. She had lived in Davenport for 15 yeras before moving to Rock Island two years ago. Mrs. Thompson is survived by her husband; a son, Thomas C. Eutsler, Salem, Iowa; her mother, Edna Lamb, Salem, and sisters, Mrs. Robert P. Coughlin, Davenport, and Mrs. Tonch C. Heartfelt, Salem. Thompson, 49, of 4820 8th Street, Rock Island, was released from custody Tuesday by Rock Island police after results of a polygraph test determined his account of the fatal shooting of his wife, Ilene, 33, “was accurate,” according to Captain Roy McGuire. Mrs. Thompson died at 6:40 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony’s Hospital from a gunshot wound in the chest, apparently, accidental, self-inflicted, McGuire said. Thompson who spent the night in the city jail cell while police continued an investigation was released shortly after the polygraph test was administered. Police said Thompson volunteered to take the test. JAMES SHAW, Rock Island County coroner, said Mrs. Thompson’s death was due to internal bleeding caused by a ruptured artery. A .22 caliber bullet entered her chest at a downward angle, Shaw Said. McGuire said Thompson and his wife had argued about his night working schedule and she complained about having to stay home alone while he was at work. Thompson told police he obtained a .22 caliber automatic pistol, cocked the chamber and handed the weapon to his wife for protection. McGuire said Thompson told police he did not recall what exactly happened then, but said he heard a shot and looked at his wife as she slumped to the floor. MCGUIRE SAID when officers arrived they could not determine a pulse in Mrs. Thompson. The officers said Thompson reached for the pistol lying on a table and began shouting his wife was dead. The officers said they had to wrestle Thompson to the floor to take the weapon away from him. McGuire said police learned of the shooting after Thompson went to the home of a neighbor, Mrs. Albert Stevel, 4900 8th Street, asking for help and telling her his wife had been shot. Services for Mrs. Thompson will be 10 a.m Friday in the Friends Church, Salem, Iowa. Burial will be in the Salem Friends Cemetery. VISITATION begins at noon today at the Knox-Larson Funeral Home. The woman died as a result of a .22 caliber bullet wound in the chest, authorities said. The jury ruled Mrs. Thompson was holding the gun when it accidentally discharged.
