Mrs. Blazic was born November 25, 1913, in Arma, Kansas, the daughter of Joe Sr. and Vincenza Carioni Timi. Iolanda was a retired school teacher and homemaker. She was raised at Camp 50 and graduated from Arma High School. She later attended Kansas State Teachers College (PSU) and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Mrs. Blazic was born November 25, 1913, in Arma, Kansas, the daughter of Joe Sr. and Vincenza Carioni Timi. Iolanda was a retired school teacher and homemaker. She was raised at Camp 50 and graduated from Arma High School. She later attended Kansas State Teachers College (PSU) and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She taught 39 1/2 years, including Polk School, Sheffield School, Capaldo, and Arma Schools, retiring in 1982. She loved being surrounded by her family at their many gatherings, especially when making the traditional Italian foods. She also enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and cross-stitching. She married Rudy Blazic on June 20, 1942, at Girard, Kansas. Mr. Blazic preceded her in death February 14, 1973. She was a lifelong member of the Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Benso and her husband Kenny of Kansas City, Mo., and Carolyn Pinamonti and her husband Bill of Pittsburg; a son, Gerald Blazic and his wife Jane Ann of Camp 50; a sister, Jessie Ossana of Arma; 10 grandchildren, Timi Shamblin (Dave), Juli Nyquist (John), Brian Pinamonti, Matthew Pinamonti (Christi), Amy Shaw (Travis), Jon Blazic (Shelli), Adam Blazic (Shalaine), and Daryn LaGrande; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter, Cheri Pinamonti; five sisters, Jennie Timi, Katie Nepote, Jennie Ciardullo, Annie Zwahlen, and Lucy Collins; and two brothers, Pete Timi and Joe Timi Jr. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 3, 2011, at the Bedene Funeral Home in Arma with the Rev. Jim Akins officiating. Burial will be at the Pittsburg Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bedene Chapel. The family will be at Iolanda's home. Washington, Box 621, Arma, KS 66712. * * * * * * * * * An American Story from the Pittsburg Sun July 17, 2009 PITTSBURG — The Blazic family believed in traveling light. Valentine and Josephine Blazic, along with their four oldest children — Louise Blazic Yoger, Henry Blazic, Valentine Blazic Jr. and Mary Blazic Bogina — emigrated from Bremerhaven, Germany, to the United States on the ship Kronprinc Wilhellm, arriving at Ellis Island on March 8, 1907. "All they had with them was one trunk, a basket and a potty for the children," said Fred Bogina, Arma, family historian. "I can't imagine six people coming to a new country with only one trunk. Most people probably couldn't even get all their clothes in one trunk." He is the son of Mary Blazic Bogina, who was only six months old when she came to the new country and remembered nothing of the trip. "Louise was the oldest, and I can remember her saying that she was in charge of the potty for the younger children," Bogina said. He said the family was of Slovenian descent, but first emigrated to Germany, where his grandmother was a seamstress and his grandfather mined coal. "That's what he came here to do — mine coal," Bogina said. "He was a miner all his life. Three of his sons and two sons-in-law also worked in the mines." The family traveled by train to Pittsburg, then went on to a mining camp called Breezy Hill, where they lived in coal company housing. Five more children were born at Breezy Hill. They were Tony Blazic, Rudy Blazic, Earnest Blazic, Angala Blazic Gentry and Matilda Blazic Rugel. "It was the ambition of the immigrants to own land, so the family bought land in the Camp 50 area, then purchased the company house in Breezy Hill and moved it to Camp 50," Bogina said. "I remember that they had a garden, chickens, cows, pigs and one horse on their land." He added that the youngest child in the family, Louis Blazic, was born in Camp 50. All 10 children of Valentine and Josephine Blazic are now deceased, but two of their spouses are still living. They are Iolanda Blazic, widow of Rudy Blazic, and Antonette Blazic, widow of Earnest Blazic. A total of 91 descendants of Valentine and Josephine Blazic attended a family reunion June 20 at the home of Brian and Gina Pinamonti, Pittsburg. Oldest person present was Iolanda Blazic, 95 years.
