Walker, for years a resident of Pawnee county, passed away at Green Gables in Lincoln on March 5, following a lingering illness. The deceased was born at Lawrence, Kansas, May 30, 1864, and at the time of his death ws 73 years, 7 months and 5 day of age. When he was about 18 months old his father was killed, and his mother brought him back to the old home in Lower West Branch, Nebr. Here in the family home of his step-father, the late Thomas Small, he grew to manhood. In December 12, 1887, he was united in marriage to Charlotte E. Howard, and to this union three sons and two daughters were born. In the days of his young manhood Mr. Walker became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Beatrice, Nebr. For many years he taught in the Sabbath school at Bookwalter and was one of a company of fine people whose religious beliefs and practices made the community a very desirable place to live in. He moved to Beatrice, Nebr. in 1924, but returned about two years later on account of declining health. Mr. Walker came of a real pioneer family, a family that faced hardships and struggles and dangers common to those people of the pioneering years. His life is a part of that history of this county that is so little known to the younger generation, and his passing only serves to call attention to those days when the settlers were few, when Indians were close neighbors, and when winding trails instead of paved highways were traveled over the many miles to the nearest town. He is survived by his wife, three sons, Guy of Hot Springs, S. Dak., Ernest of Beatrice, Nebr., Arthur of Pecos, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Rena Forney of Lincoln, Nebr., and Mrs. Amelia Tobin of Clarks, Nebr.; also three sisters, Mrs. Eldora Smith, Pawnee City, Nebr., Mrs. Minnie Schaeffer, Riverton, Iowa, and Mrs. Ella Turnbull, Burchard, Nebr. and two brothers, Samuel G. Small, Pawnee City, Nebr. and Edward E. Small, Clarks, Nebr. In this busy rushing world may we not learn something from the passing of these pioneer families, who patiently toiled and steadfastly plodded along toward a goal of achievement that was really worth while. The funeral service was held at the Methodist Episcopal church on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. W. N. Wallis, officiating. Burial was in the Pawnee City cemetery.
