From the Clay Center Times, Kansas newspaper, January 5, 1911-- The subject of this sketch, Ira G. McMillan, was born in Branch County, Michigan August 13, 1844, and departed this life January 2, 1911, at the age of 66 years, 4 months, and 20 days. His boyhood days were spent in the western part of New York (Newstead, Erie County). He married Miss Sarah Tompkins of Akron, New York October 22, 1868. To this union were born five children, three daughters and two sons, all of whom with the wife and mother mourn the loss of a kind father and faithful husband. The January following their marriage they moved to DeWitt, Michigan, from where in the spring of 1880 they moved to Clay County, Kansas, and settled on a farm near Green, where he lived until September, 1903, when he moved to Green where he spent the remainder of his life. At the age of 29 years he was converted and joined the Free Methodist Church. He lived a consistent Christian life. Thus the family has lost a loving husband and father and the community has lost a good citizen, but their loss is his gain. Funeral services were held in Green January 4, conducted by Rev. HT McGrew, pastor of the UB church, and the remains were laid to rest in the Green Cemetery to await the resurrection of the just. _________________________________________ Ira suffered a paralytic stroke in January, 1909. He was active in local Republican politics, representing his township of Highland at Clay County, Kansas conventions from at least 1883 through 1904. Ira was vice-president of Highland Township for the local GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Union veterans organization in 1894. In the Clay Center Dispatch August 26, 1897 - Ira and wife took advantage of the G.A.R. excursion to visit their old home and relatives near Buffalo (New York). Mrs. M had not been there for twenty-nine years. It was noted in "The Times" December 17, 1896 that IG McMillan had harvested 5,000 bushels of corn.
