Read More	From the February 13, 2004 Des Moines Register: Irene Catherine Shaw – Spirit Lake Irene Catherine Shaw, 91, formerly of Pocahontas, died on February 10, 2004, at the Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake, IA. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 16, at the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas, with Fr. Albert Grendler officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Pocahontas. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas. Irene, the younger of two daughters of William J. and Ella Dailey Rafferty, was born on January 22, 1913 in Claremont, IA, where she grew to womanhood. While in school, Irene became an accomplished violinist and served as captain of the Clermont High School girls’ basketball team, which at the time played on a court divided into three zones. In her senior year of high school, she was crowned May Queen. Irene next attended what was then called Iowa State Teacher’s College where she earned a teaching certification. She later took further work at the University of Minnesota. She taught first in county schools near Hampton and Cumming, IA, and then elementary school in Cumming and Pocahontas, IA. In Pocahontas she and several of her sister teachers were invited to dinner at the home of Senator Albert Shaw. Senator Shaw had three single sons and their mother, who had met Senator Shaw while she too was a teacher in the Pocahontas schools, thought it prudent her sons meet the young teachers. Shortly thereafter, Frank Shaw, a local attorney and the oldest of the Shaw brothers, courted Miss Rafferty and on September 12, 1938, he married her in a single ring ceremony in Clermont. The young bride was forced to give up her teaching contract for district policy forbade the hiring of married women teachers. Frank and Irene had two children, a daughter, Rosemary Sackett, who lives with her husband, Bill, in Okoboji, and a son, William, who lives with his wife, Debra and two young daughters in Beverly Hills, CA. After Frank’s death in 1971, Irene took charge of managing their farms and investments, traveled the world, and wrote about her travels and her life. She revived her interest in painting and spent many hours with friends at the Lakes Art Center. She later opened an art gallery on Main Street in Pocahontas to display her over 250 paintings. She wrote an autobiography which she titled, My Yesterdays. As her health failed, she lived for a time with each of her children before she entered Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake in April of 2001. She is survived by her two children and their spouses. Also surviving are four grandsons, Murphy, Morgan, Barry, and Frank Sackett; three granddaughters, Mary Sackett and Catherine and Genevieve Shaw; and a great-grandson, Sam Sackett.
