Broadwell, died at her home on Elm creek, this county, twenty miles northeast of Emporia, on Thursday night, Dec. 27th, 1870, of lung fever, aged 45 years, 3 months and 9 days. The above announcement will carry sadness to a greater number of hearts than is often caused by the news of any one's death, whose sphere of action, like Mrs. Broadwell's, has been confined through life to the circle of home; but to few homes will a greater number of hearts turn with grateful recollections than to the one which the angel of death has thus shrouded in mourning and from which has been taken the most beautiful and central figure. Mrs. Broadwell was a woman of the greatest benevolence, the kindest impulses, and refinement of soul. No cry of distress ever fell upon her ear unheeded, no troubled countenance ever passed before her unobserved; and as though possessed with a magnetic influence, no suffering soul passed within the range of her abundant sympathy but felt the weight of affliction diminish under unobtrusive ministrations. Accustomed to move in the best of circles of society, generous to a fault, tenderly affectionate, energetic and active, observing, discriminating and thoughtful, she was "A perfect woman, nobly planned," whose manners were characterized by a quiet self-possession an appropriateness. Those who needed sympathy were comforted without asking, and blessed by her presence they knew not how. In all matters pertaining to the labor and management of the large estate of her husband she took a great interest. In the labor she bore an important part, for she was one of the most untiring workers we ever saw. Her supervision, judgment and authority in all matters concerning the large farm and household were recognized and honored, while her cheerfulness and industry were an example for and an incentive to an earnest effort to all around her. She was the idol of her husband and children, and the admiration of all who knew her. On Thursday night, conscious that the hour of her departure was at hand, she most affectionately bade each one of her family farewell, and with the blest hope of a christian, calmly closed her eyes and gently passed from the scenes made beautiful by her presence to the glories of the better land. On the last day of the year 1870 she was buried on the farm, according to her request, near those she had so tenderly loved. A husband and six children, of whom a son and a daughter (Mrs. Benjamin Trumbull, of this city) are married, are mourners at her grave. Ettie, the youngest, is but three years old.
