Description	:	The daugher of Fred and Mary Marie Stolzman Hotger, she was born May 22, 1922, in rural Laurel, Iowa, 12 miles northeast of Newton. She attended Malaka No. 1 school through elementary grades and graduated from Newton Senior High School with the class of 1940. She continued her education at Iowa State Teacher's College and Drake University. On June 23, 1946, she married Clifton Zickel at the Little Brown church at Nashua, Iowa. She attended Malaka No. 1 school through elementary grades and graduated from Newton Senior High School with the class of 1940. She continued her education at Iowa State Teacher's College and Drake University. On June 23, 1946, she married Clifton Zickel at the Little Brown church at Nashua, Iowa. Following her marriage, she lived in Newton until she moved to the Hotger farm, where they lived for 40 years until they retired to Newton in 1991. Mrs. Zickel taught at Jasper County country schools for a number of years and later taught handicapped children for the Newton Community Schools for a number of years until she retired from teaching in the late 1960s. She loved to stay active. She served for many years on the Jasper County Cemetery Commission, an active member of the Jasper County Writer's Club, the election board of Malaka Township, Jasper County Genealogical Society and was a volunteer for the Jasper County Retired Senior Citizens program. Irene Rose Hotger Zickel, 80, died of pneumonia July 8, 2002 in Newton. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 15, 2002 at Reese Chapel in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith and the Rev. Lanny Tuttle officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Irene was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters: Gladys Dammam, Florence Danforth, Ruby Reuter, Marie Powell; her four brothers; Clarence, Roy, Glen and Lloyd. Survivors left to honor memory include her husband Clifton; a sister, Norma Miller of Cedar Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
