Iris was born November 21, 1917, in Slater, MO (Saline County) to Albert Herman Shields and Mattie Shields (nee Goodman). Iris was preceded in death by her father Albert Herman Shields shortly before her first birthday. Iris' mother married Claude Hill of Slater, MO, in 1927. Iris was born November 21, 1917, in Slater, MO (Saline County) to Albert Herman Shields and Mattie Shields (nee Goodman). Iris was preceded in death by her father Albert Herman Shields shortly before her first birthday. Iris' mother married Claude Hill of Slater, MO, in 1927. Iris attended Slater, MO, public schools, one year at Central Missouri State Teachers College, Warrensburg, MO, and the Kansas City College of Commerce. Iris was employed by United Securities and Sheffield Steel in the Kansas City sales offices. Married George W. DeGroodt on April 17, 1941, who preceded her in death on December 12, 1993. Their daughter (Teresa) Diane Smith born June 29, 1944, preceded her in death on July 1, 1994. Their son, Dennis DeGroodt survives and lives in Wildwood, MO. Iris lived for more than 50 years in Joplin, MO, where George owned a food brokerage firm, George W. DeGroodt and Associates. She was a member of St. John's Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, the Pilot Club and an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. Iris moved to John Knox Village in Lee's Summit, MO, in 2003 and remained there until her detah. Iris loved to travel, having made numerous trips to Europe, Australia and New Zealand - she always had a bag packed by the door. Iris said to her family, "Don't mourn for me, I've had a wonderful life. Perhaps just miss me a little." We shall miss you - your wonderful outlook on life, your acceptance of everyone as a friend and your wise counsel and advice. Iris is survived by a grandson Arthur C. Smith of Liberty, MO, his wife Kristin and their children Cooper, Macy and Jake; her daughter-in-law Ann Oberle- DeGroodt and her two granddaughters, Sarah E. DeGroodt of Minneapolis, MN, and Maria F. DeGroodt of St. Joseph, MO. Graveside service will be Thursday, June 2, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Slater Cemetery in Slater, Missouri. A memorial service will be Friday, June 3, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the John Knox Village, Lee's Summit, Missouri, in the Manhattan Room.
