Barnes Passed Away Isaac M. Barnes was born in Guernsey county Ohio, June 25, 1840, and died at his home in Churdan, Iowa, on Friday morning, March 14th, 1913, at 3:30 o'clock, after a lingering illness of several weeks, and since Saturday before his death, had been unconscious, suffering no pain as his brain was thought to be paralyzed. At the time of his death he was 72 years, 8 months, and 19 days of age. His good wife preceded him to the better land a little over a year before, passing away on February 28, 1912. Mr. Barnes was a son of Nathan and Mary Barnes, who were natives of Ohio and Pennsylvania respectfully, both passing to the great beyond many years ago. When he was ten years of age he was taken by his parents to Clinton, Iowa, remaining with them until about 20 years of age. He then went to Illinois, and enlisted in the defense of his country, in Company F, Eighty third Illinois Infantry. He went with his regiment to Fort Donelson, where he was wounded January 29, 1863, remaining in the hospital six weeks, when he received an honorable discharge and was sent home. Mr. Barnes, like many others, had never fully recovered from the effects of his army experience. Besides the loss of a limb he contracted heart trouble. Following the war, he was compelled to go about by the use of a wooden led [?], as the leg was taken off in such a shape that he was unable to secure an artificial limb which he could wear. He was rewarded by the government with a good pension, for loss of the limb and his services in the war, yet the sum seemed small when you think of the sufferings he has endured for these many years, and the fact that he was compelled to go through life with one limb. His brother James was a member of Company H. Twenty-sixth Iowa Infantry, and was killed at the battle of Arkansas, and buried at St. Louis. Another brother Nathan Barnes, enlisted in Company F, Eighty-third Illinois Infantry, returning home with a broken limb. After the war Isaac Barnes settled in Clinton county, Iowa, where he made his home until 1879. He was married September 19, 1870, to Miss Laura Nowles, who was born in Ohio, December 9th, 1848, her parents, G.R. and Emily Nowles, also being natives of Ohio. They came to Iowa in 1850, being pioneers of Scott county, where Mrs. Barnes was reared. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes were parents of nine children, eight of which are living and attended the funeral of their father. One son Lawrence, died April 23, 1888, at the age of 1 year, 1 month, 23 days. The children are as follow: Tacy Ridgway, of Dayton, Iowa; Albert M., of Chicago; Mae Bragg, of Bristol, South Dakota; Alice Cowan, Sherwood; Laura Gray, Farnhamville, Iowa; Icy, Lester and Jessie, of Churdan. Mr. Isaac Barnes was one of the old settles of Highland township, coming to this section of Iowa in 1879, locating on a farm northeast of town. He was prosperous and a well to do farmer. His health and age not permitting him to farm longer, he moved to Churdan in 1898, and remained here until his death. He has been a good citizen and neighbor, loved and honored by all who knew him. We bow our heads in sorrow, as one more old soldier answers the last roll call, has fought the last battle of life, and has passed on to his reward in the world beyond.
