Description	:	BUTLER In 1876 Isaac was working for William Fleming in Earlham, Iowa. He married William's daughter, Emma, two months before their first child was born. Isaac and Emma and the three older children moved to a sod house west of Petersburg, Nebraska, where the two younger children were born. Isaac would put in a crop, then "go west" and return for harvest. In 1894, he didn't return. He lived in California (visited his family in Iowa, Nebraska, and Oregon because there are photos) and was considered eccentric (probably from drink) but an expert in grafting trees.... Isaac would put in a crop, then "go west" and return for harvest. In 1894, he didn't return. He lived in California (visited his family in Iowa, Nebraska, and Oregon because there are photos) and was considered eccentric (probably from drink) but an expert in grafting trees. He cut off a finger while splitting kindling and was taken to the hospital. He was bathed and shaved for surgery on his finger, and when he awoke and found himself in this condition, he became so angry he suffered a stroke and died. Obituary Isaac S. Butler, a native of Illinois and a resident of Napa since 1895, succumbed at a local hospital late Saturday after having suffered a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Butler was born in Monmouth, Illinois, on August 31, 1851. For a number of years he worked as an orchardist and was recognized as an expert in this line. The deceased is survived by a widow, living at St. Edwards, Nebraska, and the following children: Pearly Butler of Elgin, Nebraska, Mrs. Alta Carper of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mrs. Blanche DeVore of St. Edward, Nebraska, and Mrs. Talitha Patience of Coin, Iowa. A son, Ivan Butler, passed away a number of years ago. The late P.F. Butler of Napa was a brother of the deceased. Another brother, R.O. Butler, resides at Monmouth,,Illinois. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren are also left. Following brief funeral services held in Oakland today under the direction of the Webber company of Napa, cremation took place. The ashes will be shipped east for interment. [Isaac's widow refused the ashes and the urn was returned to California relatives and eventually interred in Tulocay Cemetery, Napa, California]
