DeVore were held Monday afternoon, January 10, 1972. She passed away January 8th at Behlen Memorial Hospital, Columbus, from pneumonia following a broken hip. Services at the Methodist Church were conducted by Rev. Del Milander, burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. Blanche was born October 14, 1884, to Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Butler, who lived near Earlham, Iowa, In her early childhood, the family lived in a sod house on a homestead east of Petersburg in Whitten Valley. Blanche, her mother, and younger brother, Ivan, moved from their sod house west of Petersburg to Albion, Nebraska, in the spring of 1895. Isaac had failed to return from "out west" for the 1894 harvest, and the family lived on "rabbits and rutabagas" through the winter. She graduated from Albion Public School 18 May 1900, from Albion High School 24 May 1904. Blanche taught country schools in Boone County and saved her money for University of Nebraska tuition. She earned enough credits to teach high school subjects and manual arts in the schools at St. Edward and Tekamah, Nebraska. In 1917, Blanche and William Edmund Devore were united in marriage and made their home on a farm near Boone. Elmer, Ed's son by a previous marriage, joined the family and two daughters, Marece and Alta Louise, were born. Ed and Blanche farmed north of St. Edward, on the Boone Road, later moving to a farm two miles north of town. One day, while feeding her flock of ducks, she noticed that her engagement ring diamond was missing. She herded the ducks into a pen and, one by one, killed and dressed six of them before finding the stone. She bagged the ducks, hitched the pony and cart, and drove to town. She traded the ducks to the jeweler for resetting the diamond. About 1940, Blanche and Ed moved to an acreage on the west side of St. Edward. During WWII, Blanche taught shop in Tekamah, riding the train back and forth to St. Edward for the weekends. After Ed's death, Blanche rented the acreage (reserving a small apartment downstairs for herself) and kept house for Mary Keeshan and her son, Frank. She continued as housekeeper until completion of her "cottage" near downtown. A charter member of the WCTU and St. Edward Women's Club, member of the WSCS, judge for the Boone County Fair, Blanche was a staunch Democrat in overwhelmingly Republican Boone County and a precinct worker until 1970. She was Librarian in St. Edward 1957 to 1965.
