Burroughs [Henry Homer Burroughs], died here at 5:15 o'clock on June 25, after an illness of some duration caused by cerebral apoplexy. June 29, 1922 GOOD WOMAN IS GONE BY DEATH Mrs. Dora Burroughs, widow of the late Homer H. Burroughs [Henry Homer Burroughs], died here at 5:15 o'clock on June 25, after an illness of some duration caused by cerebral apoplexy. The nature of her ailment made her suffering practically free of pain. She was born near Gallivant's Ferry, S.C., on September 12, 1854, the daughter of A.H. Skipper and Sarah C. Skipper. She was married on September 30, 1873. All of her exemplary life was spent in Horry County. She is survived by relatives as follows: Mrs. Julia Causey, only surviving sister; children: Dr. H.H. Burroughs, W. Oscar Burroughs, Misses J.E. Burroughs, Nina Burroughs, S. Leon Burroughs, Augustus A. Burroughs, Mrs. J.M. Boyd, and Mrs. Jesse Woodward. One daughter, Dorothy Burroughs, preceded her to the grave several years ago. She is survived by twenty-one grandchildren. She was a true Christian. She was a member of the Methodist Church at the time of her death. She had been a faithful church member from early childhood. The funeral services were conducted by all of the pastors in Conway, the Rev. J.M. Lemmon of the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. W.L. Parker of the Conway Methodist Circuit, the Rev. J.C. Atkinson of the Conway Methodist Church, and the Rev. M.W. Gordon of the Conway Baptist Church. Many people paid their respects to the loving memory of a kind friend by their presence and floral offerings at her grave last Monday. The interment was at Lakeside Cemetery. She was tenderly watched over by Dr. H.H. Burroughs [Homer Hollingsworth Burroughs], her son, until the end. She had exacted a promise from him that in case of her illness he would never place her in the hands of any other physician. This promise was kept. He brought all his knowledge and experience to bear in the treatment of his mother, but the nature of her malady was beyond all earthly help and death could only be staid as long as possible. Notes: #1 In the above newspaper article, Dora's husband is referred to as Homer H. Burroughs. It should be Henry Homer Burroughs. A son, Dr. Burroughs, was Homer Hollingsworth Burroughs. #2 Mrs. Jesse Woodward was Fannie Moore Woodward. Fannie was actually the daughter of Henry Homer Burroughs' nephew, Wm. Anthony Moore. After the death of Fannie's mother, Fannie Hardison Moore, she was raised by Homer and Dora Burroughs as their daughter.
