Death Claimed Him While He Was Cheerfully Talking. Came to California in the Early Fifties – Eighty-Five Years Old. Isaiah Ashcraft, an aged resident of Chico died very suddenly yesterday at 5:30 p.m., in his 85th year, while sitting in the parlor of the Chico hotel. He had been feeble for the past year but was able to be about the streets and make the usual calls on his friends. Last April he had a severe attack of pneumonia from which he never fully recovered, his heart having been left in a very weakened condition. While conversing with his niece, Miss Gertrude Camper, he leaned back in a rocking chair in which he was sitting and without a moment's warning passed peacefully away. Dr. Rodley his family physician was immediately summoned, arriving at the hotel a few minutes after his death, and informed Mr. Ashcraft's relatives who were assembled at the hotel, that on account of his age and the condition of his heart the end had come about as he had expected. Mr. Ashcraft was a native of New Jersey and was born on the 13th day of March, 1826. He crossed the plains to California in 1853, locating in Reno where he conducted a hay and feed business. From there he moved to Marysville and carried on a freighting business to La Porte and Downieville. In 1862 he was married to Martha J. Camper, a sister of H.W. Camper, of this city. In 1883, with his wife, he moved to Chico and until recently conducted the Henry corral and feed yard at the Junction. Mr. and Mrs. Ashcraft were members of the Fourth street Methodist church and enjoyed a wide circle of friends, and during their twenty-six years' residence ien Chico lived happily in their home on the corner of South Broadway and Second street, Oakdale. Mr. Ashcraft was a man of honesty and integrity, and enjoyed the full confidence of his business associates. The only surviving blood relation in California is Mrs. H.S. Goodman, a niece, residing in Chico Vecino. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
