Eighteen months of invalidism ended at an early hour yesterday morning when Mrs. Martha Jane Ashcraft, wife of Isaiah Ashcraft, and for twenty-six years a resident of Chico, succumbed to dropsy at her home, First and South Main streets, South Chico. The funeral will be held from the late residence this morning at 9:30 o'clock. Rev. N.J. Crawford of the United Brethren Church will officiate. Martha Jane Ashcraft was born in South Bend, Indiana, April 5, 1839, and was consequently 69 years of age at the time of her death. In 1859, with her brother, H.W. Camper, she came to California and first located in Keystone Valley, where in 1864 she was united in marriage to Isaiah Ashcraft. Mr. and Mrs. Ashcraft then made their home in Reno, Nevada. In 1882, they came to Chico and resided in this city continuously. Surviving are the aged husband, two brothers and one sister. The brothers are H.W. Camper of Chico and James Camper of South Bend, Ind.; and the sister, Mrs. Steadman, also of South Bend. Deceased was a member of the First M.E. Church during her residence in Chico. Rev. L.R. Fulmer of the denomination is absent from the city, and Rev. Crawford of the United Brethren Church will officiate at the funeral services. With Mrs. Ashcraft there passes a woman of many kind acts, who never turned a deaf ear to deserving charity. She was of a warm, kindly nature and the last years of her life were passed in peace, the reward of a useful life. ~~~ Chico Record, Tuesday, September 22, 1908, pg 4 col 5: Funeral of Mrs. Ashcraft. The funeral of Mrs. Martha J. Ashcraft was held Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock from the residence in South Chico, Rev. N.J. Crawford of the United Brethren Church officiating. A special choir rendered several sacred selections and many old friends remembered the dead by either attending or sending flowers. The pall bearers were J.M. Reardon, C.L. Stilson, Curtis Powell, W.C. Cunningham, Roy Birch and John Ludy.
