Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal church, Rev. David Young officiating. A large crowd paid its final respects to the aged soldier. Interment was made in the Pleasant Hill cemetery, with the service there conducted by the members of the Masonic lodge. Mr. Siglin, the son of Jacob and Hannah Siglin, was born in Broadheadsville, Penn., December 31, 1846. When six years of age he moved with his parents to Sycamore, Ill., where he received his schooling and spent his boyhood years. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the 17th Illinois cavalry of the G.A.R. and served throughout the civil war. In the early part of 1864 at Pauensville, Mo., he received a wound from shot near the left eye which later in life necessitated the removal of the affected member. He participated in "Price's Raid," which lasted 52 days and nights, containing many fierce and exciting skirmishes. For three days he and his comrades were without food. When at last they obtained something to eat the meal consisted of raw guinea hen meat. Other privations and hardships during this struggle were cheerfully endured. In 1865 he served three months fighting the Indians, and in the same year received his honorable discharge at Leavenworth, Kan. He was married to Sarah Scott in Genoa, Ill., in 1872. Four children were born to this union. Six years after their marriage Mr and Mrs Siglin moved to Iowa locating in Willow township, Crawford county, and there establishing a home among the pioneers of the state. It was, too a home which thru the years provided a valuable asset to the community and which became noted for its hospitality and congeniality. Because he was a successful farmer other pioneers sought to help and advice. Through his efforts and assistance, financial and otherwise, many a young man was started on the way to success. The records show that he was president of the county school board for a long time, and justice of the peace. In 1908 he moved to Dunlap. During his residence here he was named mayor three times, first in 1912 and again in 1924 and in 1926. He was commander of the G.A.R. post for ten years. When he joined the post it had 109 members. His was the distinction of being the oldest Mason in Harrison county, having been associated with the fraternal order since 1874. He was also a member of the Dunlap chapter 385, O.E.S. for many years, and honorary member of the Daughters of the G.A.R., Council Bluffs. in 1923 he united with the Methodist church. He had no fear of death, and died as he lived - a good soldier. He was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 1918. Those left to mourn his loss are his immediate family: Wesley of Dunlap, Mrs Jennie Remde of Council Bluffs, Mrs Hattie Briggs and Will of Dunlap; together with one brother. M. V. Siglin of Woodard, Iowa and two sisters, Mrs Jane Barlow of Des Moines and Mrs Ella Whipple of Berwyn, Ill.
