Ivalee’s first three years were spent in Salina. Then, the family moved to the homestead in Achilles Township of her great-grandfather, Peter Hill (1829-1920), an early settler of Rawlins County. There, she attended first grade at Foster School. In 1922 the family moved into Achilles town to live in the three rooms off Hill General Store, owned by Ivalee’s paternal grandparents, Pete Hill (1864-1934) and Effie (Matthewson) Hill (1866-1951). Ivalee recalled the day they moved into town they stood on the porch of their grandfather’s store watching as the large blacksmith shop burned to the ground. In Achilles, Ivalee finished her schooling through eighth grade at Achilles School. One highlight of her childhood, about age 10, was a trip to Manhattan, earned through 4-H, when she was declared “the healthiest child in Rawlins County.” 4-H was important to her, and she served as a leader during her children’s growing up years in Cimarron. For Ivalee’s high school years, she moved to Oberlin, Decatur County, to attend Decatur Consolidated High School, living first with her maternal grandmother, Jennie (Morton) Johnston (1868-1960), the Sauvage family, and then great-aunt, Salina (Matthewson) Ginther (1891-1972), who for many years owned “Rainbow Lunch” out on the highway. In 1934 Ivalee left for Atwood, Rawlins County to work, and there she met and married Lary O’Grady (1900-1967), who worked for “List and Clark” and drove the construction trucks that carried large road equipment for building highways. Over the next eleven years Ivalee and Lary had four children and lived in thirteen different towns as they followed the construction work. In 1945 the family settled in Cimarron, Gray County. Lary worked as a plumber, electrician, and handyman. Ivalee, who learned sewing in 4-H, did tailoring out of her home and for Nicolette’s, the local men’s store. Later, she was the head of the Catalog Department at Montgomery Wards in Dodge City, where she never missed a day of work. In addition, she ran a milk route for 200 families in Cimarron; her last customer was the local school. The milk company produced the milk in cartons that bore the “O’grady” name instead of their company name. Many people in Cimarron still refer to Ivalee as “The Milk Lady”. She retired from Wards and the milk business in about 1981 and then worked another year keyboarding at Cimarron Insurance Company. Ivalee, always an independent person, lived in her home until August of 2010, when she moved to The Shepherd Center, where she passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011. Ivalee’s children, as well as her oldest and youngest grandchildren, were at her side when she passed. With Ivalee’s passing the last generation departs of one who knew the pioneers who settled northwest Kansas. She, herself, knew the life of a pioneer, visiting relatives in sod houses, watching her father farm with a horse-drawn plow, riding in farm wagons, living in homes without electricity or running water, and attending one-room schoolhouses. In her marriage, she survived the Great Depression, saw dirt roads built into highways, and raised her family. She knew the trials of war: her father was in WWI, her two brothers served in WWII, both her sons were Marines, with Michael serving in Vietnam. Ivalee was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Lorraine Hill (1919-1919); brothers, Duane Hill (1920-2008), of Arkansas and Dewey Hill (1923-1996), of Herndon, Rawlins County. She was survived by her four children, Sharon O'Grady Townsell, and husband, John, of Everett, Washington, Lary "Bud" O'Grady, and wife, Deloris, of Cimarron, Gray County; Karon (O’Grady) Hansarik, and husband, Joe, of Galva, and Michael O'Grady, and wife, Windy, of Vallejo, California; two sisters, Roberta (Hill) Bartleson of Augusta; and Twila (Hill) Bleam of Wichita; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. (All who will remember her famous pumpkin pies!) In addition, she has cousins living in Rawlins and Decatur County. Mrs. O’Grady was cremated, and a private family burial will be held at a later date. Mrs. O'Grady grew up in the Achilles/Oberlin area. She married Lary O'Grady in Atwood. He preceded her in death. Mrs. O'Grady worked at Montgomery Ward as a clerk for many years. She was active as a 4-H leader when her children were involved in 4-H. Mrs. O'Grady is survived by four children, Sharon O'Grady Townsell and husband John of Everett, WA, Lary "Bud" O'Grady and wife Deloris of Cimarron, Karon Hansarik and husband Joe of McPherson, and Michael O'Grady and wife Lois of San Francisco, CA; two sisters, Twila Bleam of Wichita and Roberta Bartleson of Augusta; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. In addition to her husband, Lary, she was preceded in death by her parents. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. There will be no public visitation as cremation has taken place.
