Description	:	Ivan Leo Cardwell, age 88, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Hospice of Rockingham County. A 2:00 p.m. funeral service was held on Friday, October 26, 2018, at Ayersville Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Byrd officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with military honors. A Rockingham County native, Leo was born on April 4, 1930 to the late Russell and Thelma Vaden Cardwell. Leo served his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Airforce. He was a member of Ayersville Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and was known to many youth as “Candy Man”. He was a charter member of the Ayersville Ruritan Club, serving as President and named Ruritan of the Year. He was a pillar of the community and was a man with a strong force of moral character. Leo was employed by Superior Oil Company until his retirement. Leo, known to many as “Big Daddy” was a great story teller and loved sports. He was an avid golfer and was famous for organizing “Big Daddy” golf tours for his golfing buddies for many years. He coached women’s softball and was a recreational umpire. Although he loved all sports, he was a huge Atlanta Braves and UNC Tar Heel fan. Leo is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ruthie Leake Cardwell of the home; his son, Joey Cardwell and wife Melia of Madison; a grandson, Tucker Cardwell of Raleigh; his daughter, Sue Hill Cardwell of Reidsville; two granddaughters, Cassi Cardwell of Charlotte and Erin Cardwell of New York; a sister, Shirley Cardwell Albert of Stokesdale; and a special niece, Lisa Albert Vaughn.
