Description	:	Tracy Massee was born April 18, 1901 at Fayette, Iowa, the son of George and Mary Ann (Tracy) Massee Tracy’s parents separated when he was around four and a half years old. Tracy and his mother then moved to Idaho Springs, Colorado. His mother remarried, and the family moved to Greeley, Iowa in 1913 where they lived one year. Read More	Tracy Massee was born April 18, 1901 at Fayette, Iowa, the son of George and Mary Ann (Tracy) Massee Tracy’s parents separated when he was around four and a half years old. Tracy and his mother then moved to Idaho Springs, Colorado. His mother remarried, and the family moved to Greeley, Iowa in 1913 where they lived one year. Tracy had completed sixth grade in Colorado, but the different state, books, etc. caused him to have to repeat that grade. Sometime later his mother and stepfather separated. Tracy and his mother returned to Fayette, Iowa where she went to college and then began teaching. Tracy started living with his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Hewett Tracy. Joseph Tracy was the first white child born in Clayton County, Iowa and was named for a man who had an Indian Trading Post. Tracy went to Junior and Senior High School in Fayette, graduating from there in 1920. All through high school, he was president of his class. The year following his graduation Tracy started his own carpenter shop. He taught manual training in the high school for a period of six weeks while the regular teacher was ill. His salary for his was $4.00 per day. He had his carpenter shop in Fayette for nearly fifteen years when he desired something different. He worked at the bean mill in Fayette where he was foreman for a number of years. Later he transferred to the bean plant at Hubbard, Iowa and remained for several years. Tracy then changed occupations again when he bought the cafe in Churdan, Iowa. September 17, 1949 Tracy married Phyllis Randall at Beatrice, Nebraska. He and Phyllis continued running the café in Churdan until the spring of 1950 when they sold the café and moved to Jefferson, Iowa. Tracy went back to construction work and was employed by the Johnson Construction Company of Gowrie, Iowa. Four daughters were born to this union while they lived in Jefferson: Lucinda Anne “Cindy” (June 7, 1951); Susan Elaine “Sue” (September 26,1952); Jane Alice (December 25, 1953); Karen Randy (October 25, 1956). The family then moved to Cornell, Iowa in 1960. They were there two years before locating in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Tracy, still in the carpenter business, was employed by others part of those years, but then once again became self-employed for a number of years working up until the early part of 1977. While working at his job in the summer of 1966, Tracy suffered a nasty fall from the ladder, breaking his back and several ribs. The tenth vertebrae was crushed. He was in the hospital for thirty-four days at Spirit Lake, Iowa. This was an extremely difficult time for the family, but with assistance from Phyllis’ dad helping at home with the girls, they were able to make it through. In due time Tracy returned to his routine job and continued for several more years. Early in 1977 Tracy had to quit working due to health reasons. He had a deteriorating hip which had put him on crutches, and his doctor also had him on heart medication. He was awaiting hip replacement surgery and had gone to Iowa City to see about this. Returning home, he told Phyllis his heart was acting up, and they would have to get it under control before they could go ahead with surgery. His heart medication was the same, however, Iowa City had prescribed different instructions for its use. It was early in the morning of June 18, 1977 that Tracy’s heart stopped beating while he was asleep at home.
