He lived in Rochester his entire life except for the years 1942 to 1952, which he spent in Bloomington and Indianapolis. They met while students at Indiana University. Mrs. Overmyer died April 22, 2009, after a nine-year battle with Parkinson's disease. He was a member of the Rochester High School Class of 1941 and a graduate of Columbia Elementary School. He majored in government and political science at Indiana University, Class of 1946. Jack and Marge had four daughters: Laura and husband Fred Brown, LaGrange, Ind.; Elizabeth and husband Gary Madlem, Rochester; Sarah O. and husband W.S. Wilson, Rochester; and the late Jennifer K. Overmyer, Indianapolis. They had four grandchildren: Jack Oldroyd, Elkhart; Luke and wife Nancy Wilson, Waddy, Ky.; Hannah Josephine Overmyer Wilson, Loughborough, England; and the late Robert Nelson, LaGrange. They had one great-grandson: Drake Browning Wilson, Waddy, Ky. Overmyer's newspaper career began as sports editor for The Rochester News-Sentinel prior to his senior year in high school. He remained on staff as general news reporter for a year after high school graduation, then enrolled at Indiana University in May 1942. While a student at Indiana University, he served three years - 1943 to 1946 - as athletic information director for Indiana University, publicizing all Hoosier athletic teams throughout the nation. During that span, IU won its first Big Ten football championship, in 1945. In 1946, he joined the sports staff of The Indianapolis Star and for six years was that newspaper's chief college sports writer, covering Big Ten and Indiana college athletics, as well as Indianapolis Indians baseball, Indianapolis Caps hockey and state golf tournaments. Between sports seasons, he was the sports department copy desk chief. Overmyer was managing editor of The Rochester News-Sentinel and Sentinel (renamed in 1961) from 1952 to 1966. He became editor and publisher in 1966, president of The Sentinel Corp. in 1970 and assumed full ownership of the newspaper in July 1976. At Indiana University, he was president of his social fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon and of the campus chapter of professional journalism fraternity Sigma Delta Chi. He was a member of the Blue Key and Skull and Crescent honorary organizations and was sports editor of the Indiana Daily Student campus newspaper and Arbutus, the university yearbook. He enlisted in the U.S. Army's Enlisted Reserve Corps while an IU student in 1942 and was given medical discharge in May 1943. He was managing editor of The News-Sentinel for three months that summer before returning to college in September 1943. In Rochester, Overmyer was president of the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club and of the Fulton County Players, acting in many of the group's stage productions, musicals and plays. He was the first president of the Fulton County Historical Society and editor-founder of its Quarterly publication. He was a member of the committee that organized construction of Rochester's city pool, a director of the United Community Givers (the United Way predecessor) and a member of the Lake Manitou Yacht Club. Then-Indiana Gov. Roger Branigin appointed Overmyer a trustee of Indiana Educational Services Foundation in 1968. The board elected him secretary. He was a director of the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce from 1975 to 1987 and received the Rochester Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Community Service award in 1977. He was named a director of First Federal Savings Bank in 1974 and continued to serve as director emeritus until his death. He was a former member of Indiana University's Legislative Advisory Council and Indiana Civil Defense Advisory Council. He was a former member of All Souls Unitarian Church, Indianapolis. He was a member of the Rochester Elks and Moose lodges, the Indianapolis Press Club, the Columbia Club of Indianapolis, the Nature Conservancy, the Art Institute of Chicago and the North Carolina chapter of the Royal Order of Raggedy Ass Reporters.
