He departed this earthly life and went to his heavenly home at his country home eleven miles southeast of Clay Center, Kansas, Wednesday, December 21, 1949, at the age of 88 years, 2 months and 12 days. At the early age of 14 he learned the trade of a wagon-maker in his native land and continued in that work until called into military service. He spent two years in military training in the German army. In 1884 he came to the United States of America to make his home and followed the carpenter trade for a short time. On May 1, 1887, J. J. Mall was united in marriage with Katherine Magdalene Klein, and they moved onto a farm five miles east of Clay Center where they began a long and happy married life together. In 1900 Mr. Mall purchased the farm on Mall Creek and they moved onto it and continued living there the rest of their lives. His dear wife with whom he had lived for more than sixty-six years preceded him to the heavenly home on August 1, 1947. Their’s had been a long and very happy life together. This devoted Christian couple were blessed with ten children. Three of whom preceded them in death in infancy. Beside the seven of their own whom they reared in the fear and admonition of the Lord they welcomed into their home Fred and Lena Leidig when they were left without a mother. Then in later years three grandchildren, Wendall, Vonda and Bryan Gates and their mother Lydia Gates came into the Mall home and found a deep and consecrated Christian love and security. Brother Mall was a lifelong Christian and faithful servant of the dear Lord whom he loved and served in the home, the Church, and the community, all the days of his life. He was led into Christian life in the home of his own Godly parents and united with the Evangelical Church in his native Germany in early life. And when he came to the new land of America he placed his membership in the Ebenezer German Methodist Church in 1885. Mr. Mall continued an active member and faithful worker in the Ebenezer Church and Sunday School until the years of long life and failing health requested him to remain much in his home. But still he never lost his interest in the affairs and services of his church and he continued to support it by his prayers and generous contributions to the local and missionary budgets. He taught Sunday school classes most of his active years in the church. He as a Class Leader and filled other official positions for many, many years. He was faithful and regular in attendance and prayer meetings and all regular services, and hardly ever for any reason did he fail to lead his family and any guests of the home to the Throne of Grace around the family alter before partaking of the morning meal or the beginning of the day’s work. All who came even as visitors or guests in this Godly home went away better for the godly lives and kindly interest of these Christian parents. Seven children, thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren remain to ever and always rejoice in the memory of this dear father and grandfather who loved his family only second to his Christ and his Church. These together with a great host of other relatives and friends will greatly miss the godly counsel and gracious and loving spirit of this servant of the Living Lord who like Simeon in the holy Temple was ‘waiting for the consolation of Israel,’ and who cold say with him as the end approached ‘Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace.., for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.’ Luke 2:29,30. The immediate surviving relatives are five sons, Ernest, Chris, and Adolph Mall all of Clay Center; Dr. Jacob Mall, Estes Park, Colo.;and Dr. Werned Mall of Ponca City, Okla.; Two daughters, Mrs. Riley Coltharp, Clay Center and Mrs. Lydia Gates of the home and their families. Also one sister-in-law Mrs. John Steileger and her family. The funeral service was conducted in the Ebenezer Methodist Church. Friday afternoon, Dec. 23, at 2 o’clock after a short service at the Peterson-Neill mortuary, by Rev. C. L. Ruhlen, the pastor, assisted by Rev. L. R. Fish. The music was furnished by the male quartet of August Schmidt, Paul Roth, Harry Musselman, and Fred Rosenow. Miss Ruth Leidig was the accompanist and pianist. Three numbers were used at the church and one at the cemetery. Interment was in the family plot in the Ebenezer cemetery. The church was well filled with relatives, friends and neighbors. There was a great profusion of beautiful floral offerings presented in memory of this good man who had been an active member of the Ebenezer church for more than half a century. All of the children were present except one, Dr. Jacob Mall, Estes Park, Colo. There was also a number of relatives and friends from other places who attended this memorial service.”
