Clarence Moore of Carl. Jacob Bixler was born in Ohio, July 9, 1833, and was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Bixler. He is the last of a family of nine children. In 1858 he was married to Eleanor Snyder and to them eight children were born, three of whom died in infancy. The children who survive are Mrs. Kate Feese of Opal, South Dakota, Mrs. Hattie Fletcher of Thurston, Nebraska, Mrs. Lulu Vinnedge of Boulder, Colorado, Mrs. Lottie Ray of Lake Park, Iowa, and E. O. Bixler of Carl. His wife died in 1880 and in 1882 he was married to Orphan Ray who survives him. The two children by this marriage are Mrs. George Hayes of Corning and E. E. Bixler of Emmetsburg, Iowa. Ninety one and one half years is a long time to live, but not a bit too long when one has lived worthily as has this fine pioneer gentleman whose passing must touch with sorrow the lives of many people in Adams County among whom he has lived for 66 years. The plains of Iowa lured him long before there were railroads to bring him here in comfort. He came by rail to Iowa City and leaving the train at the point he carried his “carpet bag” and walked to Adams County, Iowa and landed in Queen City, July 10, 1858. His father, Jacob Bixler, lived at that time four miles west of Quincy which was then the county seat. His first work in the county was teaching in the Queen City schools. He was one of the first elected sheriffs of Adams County and served in that capacity during the Civil War period. In 1863 he settled on the farm where he lived until two years ago and is said to have been the oldest citizen of this community who has continuously resided on the same place. In this changing, shifting, restless generation, such character gives us a sense of stability which brings satisfaction and assurance. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Carl. The last two years of his life have been spent with is daughter, Mrs. George Hayes. He has been in excellent health until last summer when it is believes he had two light strokes of paralysis although he would never admit that he was sick or in any way ailing. It was apparent that he began to fail from this time, but was able to be about. The last weeks the decline was more rapid and on Wednesday before his death he went to bed. There were no pronounced symptoms of disease and his death seemed mere fainting of physical powered and a gradual decline due to old age.
