Description	:	John Bixler, Sr., died last Friday a his home in Douglas township. He was in his eightieth year and was an old and respected resident of this county. He came to Adams County in 1851 and was a man much loved and respected among his fellow men. He came to Adams County in 1851 and was a man much loved and respected among his fellow men. Adams County Free Press, January 17, 1903, page 4 John Bixler, who died at his home in Douglas township on January 9, mention of which was made in our last issue, was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, March 4, 1823 and at the time of his death he was aged 79 years, 10 months, and 5 days. When a lad of eight, he moved with his parents to Ohio, where he grew to manhood and married Miss Savilla Ann Markley, November 25, 1846. After a short residence in Ohio, they moved to Indiana where they lived one year. Their residence in the later state was saddened by the death of their 13 month old daughter, "Little Margaret." From Indiana they moved to Adams County, arriving here in October, 1854, with a family of two small children and but 75 cents in money. They were young and ambitious and determined to earn for themselves a home. They settled up Walter's branch south of Quincy. their conveyance from Indiana was two ox teams and their household and faming utensils consisted of what they could haul in two wagons. But few, if any young couples would today start to a new country 600 miles distant with nothing but an ox team as a means of transportation. Mr. and Mrs. Bixler lived to see this country transformed from a wilderness to one of the most prosperous countries in the Union-they did much to improve and make it what it is. In church and school matters they were always deeply interested and took an active part in their development. To them was born thirteen children, eleven of whom grew to manhood and womanhood, they being, Burr F. of Nashville, Tennessee, Jane E., wife of U. E. Coleman of Douglas township, Louisa Hoyt, R. A. a minister of the Gospel, residing in Douglas township, Isabel Markley of Douglas Township, Jacob T. Bixler and Lydia Welton of South Dakota, Charles K., who died in 1895 while teaching in the Corning High School; Lillie, wife of C. C. Strait, who died in 1887; John M, who resides near the homestead; Ellie May, wife of J.O. Narrigon, who has been her father and mother's stay during his long helpless condition, he having been stricken with paralysis in March 1900. He has three living brothers, Joseph of Villisca, Jacob of Carl, and William of Quincy, and a sister living in Owena County, Indiana. At the age of 22 he united with the M.E. Church and remained a steadfast member of that faith until 1880, when he heard Elder S. Forester of the A.X. church and saw the glorious truth that makes them a people, and with his devoted and faithful wife embraced the faith, was buried in baptism and ever after walked in the light of that faith as it shone on his pathway. The funeral occurred January 11, 1903 from the Highland A. C. Church conducted by Rev. Bolster of Villisca, taken from the text of Revelations XXI: 2, "There shall be no more death." Interment was made in the Nodaway Cemetery, where he sleeps awaiting the call of his Master in the morning when He calls all to their reward. May Jesus come and open the graves of old earth and let our loved ones free. May his faithful wife, who walked so many years by his side be faithful a few days more when Jesus calls them where all eyes shall be opened anew. Adams County Free Press, January 24, 1903, page 10
