The Ritterbushs had gone to Springfield, Mo., about three weeks ago, where they expected to spend the winter. The Ritterbushs had gone to Springfield, Mo., about three weeks ago, where they expected to spend the winter. Their sons Fred and Charley with their families went to that place Thursday last week to to be present at a family reunion. The body was brought here for interment. Jacob Ritterbush was born in Prussia October 9, 1844, and departed this life at Springfield, Mo., December 24, 1927, at the ripe age of 83 years, 2 months, and 15 days. In 1852 his parents immigrated to America and settled at Madison, Wisconsin, where they remained until 1858. From there they moved to Illinois. In 1862 while only a lad of fifteen years, he wanted to go into the army, but the parents could not consent, so he went back to Wisconsin and enlisted in Company G 29th Wisconsin Infantry. He served his country three years and was wounded in battle at Champion Hill. He was discharged in 1865, when he engaged in the grocery business. Later he took a course and graduated from the Rutlege & Davidson Business College. He came to Nebraska in 1870 and located in Clay County, where he took a homestead near Edgar. He opened the first store in that place, and afterwards also had the first stock of goods that was brought to Nelson. He at one time also owned a store in Kansas. In 1887 Mr. Ritterbush was elected clerk of Nuckolls County. He was united in marriage to Martha Defreuse in Springfield, Illinois. To this union were born three children: Mrs. Emma Busch of Mountain Grove, Mo., and Mrs. Lula Grary of St. Louis. The third child as well as the mother have departed this life. Mr. Ritterbush on January 4, 1881, was married to Mary E. Ellis. Four children were born to this union: Mrs. Fred Jones, now of Springfield, Mo., Mildred C. Fred O. and Charles E. He leaves to mourn his death, besides the wife and children, eighteen grand children and two great grand children and a host of friends. The deceased was a member of Grand Army Post No. 15 of Nelson, and became its first Adjutant, when the Post was organized. Was a member of Nelson Masonic Lodge No. 77, being its first Worshipful Master. He was also a Shriner and Kinght Templar. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith when about twelve years of age. Mr. Ritterbush was one of the real pioneer builders of this town and county and has been a faithful servant throughout the many years he has resided here, in many and varied capacities. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the Christian Church, with Rev. W.R. Arnold of Grand Island, a former pastor here, officiated with Rev. Allen Chamberlain of the Methodist Church and Rev. Stephen H. Jones of the Presbyterian Church, assisting. The ritualistic ceremony of the Masonic Order was held at the cemetery.
