Read More	The Salem, Indiana Democrat, September 26, 1883 Murder Most Atrocious This community was startled last Friday morning (September 21) by the report that Jacob Johnson had been murdered and robbed. The circumstances of the crime as they have been developed are about as follows. Young Johnson, who resides on Delaney's Creek, had been attending the fair at this place Thursday, and had started late in the evening, on horseback, bound for the residence of his affianced in Gibson township, intending to return next day accompanied by the young lady to the fair (which accounts for him not taking the direct road for his own home), and when out near the Friends' meeting house, some three miles from Salem, he was assaulted, murdered and robbed. Young Johnson's body was found early Friday morning by Riley Fawbush and family who were on their road to town, and were about to pass the place when one of the occupants of the wagon called to Mr. F. that there was a man laying over by a gate. Mr. F. immediately alighted from the wagon and recognized the body as that of young Johnson, and hastened to town and notified Coroner Caress, who hurriedly repaired to the scene of the murdered young man. The body presented a shocking spectacle. The face and skull were crushed in about the eyes in a horrible manner, evidently done with a piece of board, and a bullet had passed entirely through his chest from left to right, which alone would have caused instant death. The Coroner after viewing the premises at once conveyed the body to town and held an inquest, making diligent search for any and all information he could get that would throw any light around this mysterious murder, and failing to find any clue strong enough to warrant arrests, turned the matter over to a special grand jury convened by Judge Collins for that purpose, who now have the matter under way and who will doubtless find a bill. Ex-sheriff Craycraft has been engaged to assist in working up the case, and nothing will be left undone to ferret out the perpetrators of this atrocious crime. A young man who resides close to the scene of the murder saw two men in pursuit of the unfortunate young Johnson, one of whom was riding a grey horse, and he also heard three shots fired, one of which missed the intended victim and lodged in the hip of his (Johnson's) horse, while he was making away from his persuers (sic) as rapidly as he could urge the animal forward. The young man doubtless has an idea who the guilty parties are who are concerned in this horrible crime, but being a very diffident young man is probably afraid to tell all he knows of the circumstances. Two young men have left the county under suspicious circumstances and the suspicion at present points in that direction. Jacob Johnson was a young man lacking only a month or so of having reached his majority, and was regarded by all who knew him as a quiet and industrious young man. Whatever clue has been obtained the officers are keeping to themselves. It is however generally believed that they have a clue that will bring the guilty parties to justice. The reward offered is about $500, part of which was offered by the county and the balance being raised by subscription. **** Capture Of Ovid White The Republican Leader, April 18, 1890 A telegram was received here last Friday from Mineola, Texas, stating that Ovid White, wanted in this county charged with the murder of Jacob Johnson, had been arrested at or near that place by Deputy Sheriff Terrell. A requisition was called for, obtained and forwarded last Saturday. No word has yet been received as to the time of his arrival here, but he is expected today or tomorrow. A reward amounting to $350 to $400, subscribed by friends of the murdered man, will have to be paid the captors, and this is the only reward now standing. The crime that he is charged with is the killing of Jacob Johnson on the night of Sept. 20, 1883, on the road from Salem to Little York. The body of Johnson was found by the side of the road near the Friends church. White and Omri Thompson were suspicion (sic), but not until they had fled next evening was any attempt made to arrest. Thompson was arrested in Kansas in 1885, and after trial was sentenced to a life term in the State prison. At this trial Thompson testified that White did the shooting and that he was trying to prevent the killing. All three were on horseback and riding at full speed while the firing was going on. Jack White is the son of Jesse and Mary White, two of our highly respected and most worthy citizens, and much sympathy has always been expressed for the family in this trouble. Jack was a wayward boy, pleasant and good natured when sober, but a demon when drunk, and it was after a day's drinking that this encounter occurred. ** The Republican Leader, April 18, 1890 The following clipping is taken from the local columns of the Leader of Aug. 29, 1885: "Ormi Thompson, son of Levi J. Thompson, who was charged with being one of the murderers of Jacob Johnson in Sept. 1883, was arrested at the house of Fielding Briscoe, Wyandotte, Kan., last week, and brought back here Tuesday evening and lodged in the county jail. Quite a crowd of the curious met the officers at the depot. There has been no attempt at violence, although Sheriff Rudder decided to be on the safe side, and has guards, well armed, in and about the jail." ** Jach White In Jail The Republican Leader, May 2, 1890 Ovid White was brought to Salem last Thursday evening on the 9:22 train from Louisville by City Marshal Terrell and Dept. U.S. Marshal Peques and lodged in jail to await trial at the May term of court for the murder of Jacob Johnson in 1883. The arrest of White occurred at Mineola, Wood county, Texas. The arrest was brought about, it is reported, by Whites talking too much while under the influence of liquor. $500 reward was paid over to the Texans and they left for home Friday. The many stories concerning the murder, arrest, & etc., as published in the city papers are exaggerated and mostly false. Young White does not have much to say except that he is innocent of the killing and that Thompson did the deed while he was trying to prevent it. ** Article appearing in Salem, Indiana newspaper, 1890 Ovid White, (generally known as "Jack" White), who is one of the men who killed Johnson between Canton and Salem six or seven years ago, has been in the jail in Salem since last Thursday night. He was arrested in Wood County, in the northeast part of Texas, about four weeks ago. At the time he was employed at a saw mill under an assumed name and the fact that he was other than he represented himself to be was first made known to his employer by "Lon" Bonaficino, formerly of this county, happening to meet White and addressing him by his right name. White was under the influence of liquor and the man with him and Bonaficino, pretending to fall asleep, listened to their conversation until he learned enough of the facts to know where White was from and the nature of his crime. He then notified the marshal of Minneola, who arrested him the next afternoon. He was arrested on Sunday and was asleep when the officers came upon him. He offered no resistance and expressed himself as glad that he was arrested, saying that he would rather meet the punishment which awaited him than live the life he had been living. The officers left for home Friday morning, having received the $500 reward offered by the county and by private citizens. White talks little but tells substantially the same story told by Thompson except that he denies doing the shooting. He has no attorneys yet, but his trial will probably come off the May term of court. ** Burial Record: Jacob S.
