The father of Mrs. Johnson, William Warinner who came here from North Carolina. He was married to Susanna England and lived on Walnut Ridge when first married and it was there that Margaret Warinner was born, the 27th day of December 1827. She was the oldest of ten children-of whom there is yet living herself and one brother, John Warinner, who was a resident of Salem for many years but is now at Los Angeles, California. Just as all girls in rural homes of that day were taught, she was taught the accomplishments of sewing, cooking, spinning and weaving. Habits of industry and economy were formed then that are plainly noticed in her life and character today. Very gentle and thoughtful of others, she won many friends in the neighborhood on Delaney's creek where her father had come from Walnut Ridge and bought land. He continued to live there until Margaret was married to David Johnson, when he and his wife Susanna retired from active daily toil and moved to Salem to spend their declining years. To David and Margaret Johnson who still lived on the old home place, there were born ten children, all of whom grew up on the farm. We speak of this period as the best and fullest of her life. Wifehood and motherhood was complete and perfect. It was happiness to her to see to the ways of her household. Providing wholesome food to eat and clothes to wear was real pleasure to her and not work. Fields of flax yielded the material, which was prepared by a long and laborious process for spinning into thread on the little wheel. This spinning was done mostly at night by the light of the old grease lamp and the tallow candle. The hour of ten often found the spinner still at her wheel getting the thread ready for the loom, on which she wove fine linen for towels, tablecloths, sheets and pillow cases and a coarse linen to be made into pants for summer wear for her husband and her boys. Flax pullings were social events. They were given usually as moonshine parties when the young people were invited and gathered in the field, pulling the flax by moonlight. Much laughter and song were borne away on the night air, while cupid watched and hovered near. Sheep-shearing was another phase of work and wool pickings-where twenty or thirty neighbors came-bordered on social life, especially as the noon hour came, when the hostess served an abundance of nutritious eatables from her well stocked larder. The barn raising, the corn husking, the apple peeling, the wood chopping and the quilting were all opportunities for doing a good turn and mingling in a friendly way. When a young girl, Mrs. Johnson sometimes went with her father to Louisville to do a little trading. Their wagon was drawn by an ox team and the trip would take a week. Her father and mother very often went to Indianapolis when that city was nothing but a little hamlet. Making the long and tiresome journey with the oxen-taking their products to the city market, and getting supplies for the farm home. Margaret Warinner Johnson will be 87 years old next December. Almost all of that time, eighty six and one half years she spent in this county, except some visits of short duration, and two years in Iowa, where she and her husband and three small children went to live-making the trip in a covered wagon in four weeks time. She was not satisfied in her new home in the West and they came back to the Delaney's creek farm and stayed there until the death of her husband, nine years ago. Since that time she has been living with her daughter Mrs. Henry Peugh, who is very devoted to her aged mother. Mrs. Johnson has always had the best of health until last spring when the Peugh family was put to great inconvenience and discomfort by a fire at their home the 28th of February. Her health has been failing since that time when she contracted a deep cold; with severe nervous shock that has brought about conditions from which she can not recover. Mrs. Peugh is assisted in caring for her invalid mother by Mrs. Laura Cartwright, of Oklahoma, a granddaughter that Mrs. Johnson reared from infancy as one of her own children, making eleven in all that this industrious and economical woman has patiently guided and mothered from the cradle to manhood and womanhood. Since coming to Salem to make her home with her daughter Eliza, she has been very active and eager to do for herself, doing a bit of sewing, knitting her own stockings and has pieced sixteen quilts. She enjoyed going about the town for a short visit with friends and especially a trip to the old home place on Delaney's creek, where she spent some time last fall among the people who know her well and love her. ****** The Salem Democrat, Salem, Indiana, Wednesday, July 29, 1914 MARGARET WARRINER JOHNSON After a few weeks of intense suffering Mrs. Johnson died Monday night, July 27, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Peugh, where a short funeral service will be conducted by Elder T. J. Wilson, nine o'clock Wednesday morning. After the funeral the body will be taken to the old church yard in Gibson township, at the Gater school house and laid to rest by the side of her husband, two sons and one daughter, who preceded her in death a number of years ago. A sketch of the long and useful life of this aged woman, together with her picture appears on the first page of this issue. Nothing much can be added unless we speak of her great patience during the last illness and a constant thoughtfulness for those who care for her. Much sympathy is felt for Mrs. Peugh, who waited on the sufferer so faithfully-doing all that she could do to cheer and brighten the last days of a tender, affectionate mother, who leaves one son, John J. Johnson, of Missouri, and two daughters, Mrs. Peugh and Mrs. Nancy Cunningham, of Ashland, Oregon, and a great number of friends to mourn her departure.
