Death ended the earthly suffering of Jacobus Lorenz Schoon last Saturday morning at 4:15 o'clock. During the past two years he had suffered severely with dropsy, and was given tender care by his children. At the time of his death he was in his eighty-first year. Mr. Schoon was a native of Germany. He was born December 24, 1849, in the town of Mueggenkrug, Ostfriesland. Germany. His parents were Kobus and Renske (nee Ostermann ) Schoon. He was baptized January 6, 1850, by the pastor of the Lutheran church. Rev. Gitterman. He was later confirmed in the same church, April 13, 1865, by the same pastor. Mr. Schoon received his early schooling in the town of his birth. When a lad of twenty years he emigrated to the United States, in the month of May, 1869. He first settled in Wayne township, and later was employed as a farm laborer near Center Junction for several years. He was married to Mary Helgens, December 31, 1879. The ceremony was performed by Rev. C. Mardorf, the former pastor of Zion's Lutheran church of Wayne township. Mrs. Schoon passed away February 28, 1928. Mr. Schoon is survived by two daughters. Emma, who is the wife of John Warner, of St. Cloud Minnesota. Lena, who is the daughter of Adolph Eggers of Amber, and six sons: George, Will, Lorenz, Adolph, Henry and Alva, who live in the vicinity of Amber. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Schoon settled upon a farm near Amber. They lived here many years, and were successful in their farming activities. When this work became too arduous, they retired, and lived for six years in Monticello. They felt that they would be happier living on the home farm, where they had spent the major portion of their lives. They therefore built a new home on the farm in 1927, and removed to that place. Their happiness was not for long, for Mrs. Schoon was called by death, February 18, 1928. Since that time Mr. Schoon had continued to live in his home near Amber. He received the final rites of his church through the offices of his pastor. Funeral services were held last Tuesday morning, January 28. Preliminary services were held at 10 o'clock at the family home at Amber, and final services were held at Zion's Lutheran church in Wayne township at 10:30 o'clock. Rev. J. Willms, pastor of that church, had charge of both services. Mr. Schoon's body was laid to rest on the family burial lot in the cemetery adjoining the church.
