Woodhead had died suddenly at 11:30 a.m. While it had been more or less evident for the past year that the deceased has been failing in health, he had been about as usual. At the time he was stricken, he, together with his son Norman of Lincoln, who was here for a short visit, were fixing a lawn mower. The immediate cause was given as appoplexy (sic) and heart trouble. Mr. Woodhead is the last of the Survivors of that corner of town that has been called "Jimtown" from the fact that three "Jims", Jim Hazlett, Jim Phelps and Jim Woodhead lived on three adjoining corners. The other corner was occupied by O. J. Merrill and they re-christened him "Jim" The three "Jims" were civil war veterans and had a flag pole on that corner. Mr. Woodhead was one of the pioneers of this section and for years lived on a farm northeast of Edgar. After moving to town he engaged for a time in the pump and well business and after that operated a feed store. He always has been a man of vigor, and strength and his erect carriage and spritely (sic) step was an inspiration to many of the younger generation. He was a man of strong convictions and fearless in his views. He chose his friends with discrimination and those whom he called friends were made to realize the beauty and fullness of friendship that endures. The community is impoverished by his passing. Funeral Services were conducted Thursday afternoon from the Methodist Church, with the American Legion and Rev Boyer in charge. The business houses were closed during the funeral. James Allen Woodhead was born at Yheatland, (sic) Wisconsin, October 5, 1844. His father, John Woodhead was a native of Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England and His mother was a native of Londonderry, Ireland. His boyhood days were spent in Kenosha County, Wisconsin, until the breaking out of the Civil War, when he enlisted in Company I, 33rd, regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and served three years of the war. On the 19th day of November 1869 he was united in marriage to Julia A. Ashley. To this union were born six children, Charles E. of Sutton, Nebr., Mrs. R. L. Ashton of Twin Falls, Ida., Norman of Lincoln, Nebr., Mrs. Richard O'Keefe of Lincoln, Nebr., James O. of Ong, Nebr., and Stephen A. who died in infancy. Mrs. Woodhead died September 22, 1884 and in 1885 he married Carrie L. Munsel who survives him. To this union was born one son, W. M. Woodhead of Grand Island, Nebr. Mr. Woodhead also leaves two brothers, Leslie Woodhead of Nora, Nebr., and Frank Woodhead of Ong, Nebraska, and a sister Mrs. Belle Munsell, also of Ong. Mr. Woodhead was one of the pioneers of Clay County, settling on a homestead in Logan township in June 1871. During a revival conducted by Rev C. W. Wells, at the Lenfest school in the winter of 1888, Mr. Woodhead and his wife joined a class of the Methodist Episcopal Church, which was formed there, and later added to the church at Ong, from which their membership was transferred to the church at Edgar Contributor: Jan Plambeck (46975511) • [email protected]
