Description	:	Buried beside wife, Nancy E. (Ward) Spoon who he married on May 24, 1866. Inscribed on stone: "Co. D. 70th IND. VOL." James Spoon was the youngest of fourteen children born to Peter and Elizabeth Spoon. He was a Civil War Veteran who fought under the command of Col. Benjamin H. Harrison for four years. James Spoon was the youngest of fourteen children born to Peter and Elizabeth Spoon. He was a Civil War Veteran who fought under the command of Col. Benjamin H. Harrison for four years. He loved to talk about his experiences and have reunions with his old comrades. On the October 6, 1923, he fell from a tree in his yard and broke his hip. From then, he was a helpless invalid. His obituary recounts a visit made to him by Uncle John Shufflebarger. Apparently James Spoon had been unsaved at the time of the fall from the tree and had continued to scoff at religion. But on the day of this particular visit, James Spoon became a saved man. Uncle John Shufflebarger died 3 days later. From his obituary: "Too much cannot be said of this dear wife's devotion. For sixty-one years she has loved and prayed for this husband, and been true through every adversity ... She can go forward with the sweet confidence that he will be waiting to welcome her on the other side." For many years, he was the oldest native resident of Mooresville, Indiana. At the time of his death, he was survived by his widow, Nancy; three children, Otto Spoon, Mrs. Lula Middaw, and Mrs. Mayme Greeson; 2 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews. He died at age 86 years, 3 months and 19 days.
