Howie Were Held Last Tuesday Afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church This community suffered the loss of a well known and highly respected gentleman, James A. Howie, last Saturday afternoon at his home on Brad street. He had been in failing health for some time due to heart trouble, and during the last two weeks of his life was tenderly cared for by his family. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the First Presbyterian church in Monticello. Rev. Howard C. Irvine of Birmingham, Iowa, had charge of the services. Rev. Irvine was a former pastor of Peniel Presbyterian church is Castle Grove township and was an intimate friend of the Howie family. Following the church services burial was made in the family lot in Oakwood cemetery Born in 1855 Mr. Howie was a native of Jones county and was born on the 29th of August in Castle Grove township in 1855. He therefore had passed his 82nd birth anniversary. He was a son of R.A. Howie and Mary Springer Howie. Practically his entire life had been spent in and near Monticello. As a young man he attended the rural schools of Castle Grove township and grew to young manhood on his father's farm. He was married March 13, 1888, to Eugenia Laude, daughter of James and Eugenia (Valley) Laude. They started housekeeping on the Howie farm in Castle Grove township. In a recent reminiscent article in the Express Mr. Howie remarked, "I followed the plow for 71 years." He was never happier than when he was busily engaged in farm work. Five Children Mr. and Mrs. Howie had five children, viz: Mrs. Merle Cass (Lulu) of Monticello; Robert, deceased; Olin R. Howie and Lynn Howie of Castle Grove township and Mrs. Norman Bringard of Detroit, Michigan. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild. After many years of strenuous farm work Mr. and Mrs. Howie retired from the farm and settled in their home on Brad street a year ago, taking a deserving rest from their many years of labor. Mr. Howie is also survived by one sister and two brothers; Mrs. Paul Black of Castle Grove township, Frank Howie of Abilene, Kansas; and William Howie, Creston, California. Mr. Howie was the eldest of a family of seven children. He was always greatly interested in the work of the Peniel Presbyterian church. The ground upon which the church was built was donated by his father, Robert Howie. During his Castle Grove residence Mr. Howie served as a school director, a trustee of Castle Grove township and was one of the organizers of the Castle Grove Mutual Insurance company, and also held the office of treasurer in this company. He had served as trustee of the Peniel church since its organization. His acts of charity were numerous and there were few people in distress who when they asked Mr. Howie for help did not receive the same ungrudgingly.
