Read More	James Hunter, Pioneer, Passes Away Friday James Anderson Hunter, 86 year old pioneer of Box Butte county passed away at his home in Alliance Friday evening. One of the most famous cattlemen of Western Nebraska, “Jim” suddenly died while eating his supper. Mr. Hunter was very well known to residents over this territory. He had lived in Alliance since 1907, and before that time had operated the “home” ranch north of Hemingford on the Niobrara river now the property of his son Robert. He was born on a farm in Montgomery County, Illinois, September 17, 1862, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Anderson Hunter. His parents had immigrated from Scotland in 1842 in a sailing vessel which took six weeks to reach America. When he was a small boy, he moved with his parents to a farm near Walshville, Illinois, the village where he attended public school. Later he attended Jones Commercial College in St. Louis, MO, and then went to Texas about 1880 to join the Hunter, Evans, and Hunter Cattle Company. The Hunters were cousins of Jim, and together with Evans purchased and drove 6,500 longhorn cattle to Sheridan County, Nebraska. A ranch was established 8 miles south of where Rushville is now located. Mr. Hunter remained associated with the three men until 1884 when the company moved to Montana because of increased settling of the country. Mr. Hunter formed a partnership with Ben Tibbit and the two men bought 470 mares and located their ranch on the Niobrara River north of here. However, they were forced to move the horses out about two years later because of the number of settlers coming in. After filing a homestead timber claim on the ranch which now has 7,000 acres and proving the claim, Mr. Hunter built a sod house at the ranch and in 1888 he was married to Anna Harris. The couple had two children, Robert and a daughter, Grace, who died at the age of 11 months. His wife passed away in 1894. In 1897, he was married to Nell Harris, a sister of his first wife. In 1891, Mr. Hunter built a frame house at the ranch, and the house was enlarged after his son Robert was married to Zillah Stewart of Broken Bow. His youngest son James owns the Drake Hotel in Alliance. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Nellie Harris Hunter; two sons Robert and James and six grandchildren. Funeral services were here Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Alliance with Rev. J. LaVerne Jas as minister. Internment was in the Hemingford Cemetery with Landa Funeral Home in charge.
