HUNTER IS FISHING BOAT VICTIM James Harris Hunter, 56, lifelong resident of Alliance and owner of the Drake Hotel, drowned in a boating accident in Sheridan Lake in South Dakota’s Black Hills early this morning. Bernard Brice Hospitalized. His companion, Bernard Brice, also of Alliance, was able to stay afloat and get to shore but he spent about three hours in the water and was suffering from exposure. He was hospitalized but was reported in good condition today. Reports today from Rapid City, where Brice is hospitalized, say Mr. Hunter was wearing a life jacket when his body was taken from the lake. Messrs. Hunter and Brice left Alliance on Monday afternoon to do some night fishing in the lake according to members of the Hunter family. The two had fished numerous times together, and according to the reports received here by the families, they had hooked a large fish. As the two men were bringing it in, the boat capsized. Mr. Hunter was born February 16, 1910, in Alliance, and married Pauline Mae Pickerell in Harrison on April 13, 1931. She survives. He was a member of the Methodist Church, the Elks Lodge, the American Legion and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In addition to his widow he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jon (Jean) Jacobson of Omaha and Mrs. Arnold (Janet) Christensen of Alliance; and by a son, James Jr. of Alliance; and by seven grand-children. Funeral Thursday Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, at the Methodist Church with the Rev. Loyd Bliss officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. The Bates-Landa Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. WHO’S WHO IN ALLIANCE James H. Hunter Another young Alliance business man who is carrying on in the footsteps of his pioneering father is James H. Hunter, partner-owner of the Drake Hotel. Mr. Hunter took over the management of the Drake when he and his father bought the holdings of D. K. Neumeyer June 10, 1931. For five months prior to then Jim was in partnership with Mr. Neumeyer. Born in Alliance February 16, 1910, Mr. Hunter went to grade and high schools here, graduating in 1928. He played two years of high school football at the center position. In the fall of 1928, Mr. Hunter enrolled at Denver University. Health prevented him from attending long, and the following fall he entered Chadron normal college. In 1930, Jim took a course at Barnes Business college in Denver. RETURNED HERE: Mr. Hunter started work as a clerk at the Guardian State Bank in 1930, and went to Arizona, after six months work, returning the next year to enter the hotel business. While going to school, Jim worked on his father’s ranch, located on the Niobrara river north of Hemingford. He also worked in local stores. Mr. Hunter and Pauline Pickerell, popular Alliance girl, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Pickerell, were married April 13, 1931 at Harrison. They live at 720 Box Butte. The Hunters are seen at many social affairs. Mr. Hunter is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Country Club, and is affiliated with the Methodist church. Jim’s father, known to most of the Panhandle old-timers, came to this territory before Alliance was founded. He drove cattle north into the sandhills when only a few stock outfits were located here. The senior, Mr. Hunter, now retired, lives with his wife at 724 Box Butte.
