A native of Rowan County, he was the retired co-owner of Bame's Builders Supply & Furniture Co. of Carolina Beach. He was an elder at his church, superintendent of the Sunday School, a member of the Building Committee, and a member of the Men of the Church. He served on the Town Council of Carolina Beach, was retired from the Carolina Beach Volunteer Fire Department, and was a charter member of the Carolina Beach Lions Club. He was a member of Wilmington Masonic Lodge 319 AF & AM, of Federal Point Lodge 753 AF & AM, of Sudan Temple, A.A.O. N.M.S., the Arab Shrine Club, and of United Commercial Travelers. He was also a member of the Wilmington Executive Club, chairman of the Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank of Carolina Beach, and was Citizen of the Year for Carolina Beach in 1991. Surviving are wife, Ruby Bame Knox; sons, James Howard Knox of Fort Mill, S.C., David Wilson Knox of Wilmington; daughter, Mrs. Joyce McLaughlin of Mooresville; brothers, Robert Howard Knox Jr., David Clark Knox, both of Cleveland, N.C., John Allen Knox of Statesville; sisters, Mrs. Wylie Smith, Miss A. Lois Knox, both of Cleveland, N.C., Mrs. Catherine Beam of Rutherfordton, Miss Mary Emma Knox of Salisbury; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church, 1209 N. Lake Blvd., Carolina Beach, N.C. 28428. Andrew's Mortuary in Wilmington is in charge of arrangements.
