Once more it becomes our faithful and painful duty as a citizen to announce the death of another of our old, esteemed and worthy citizens, who died at his home in Read township on the evening of the 30 ult. Mr. Uriell was born on the farm where he died on Sept. 21st, 1840 and therefore had lived only a few days past his 52nd birthday. He was a son of Patrick Uriell, a native of Ireland and who came to Clayton county in the fall of 1838, and in the spring following settled on the farm where his son has recently died, as the second white settler of that township. Two of his brothers, Michael and John came with him, and they jointly assisted each other until within a short time they had opened up three good farms, which they divided among them, and here for many years lived these three brothers in the enjoyment of every comfort that labor and industry could bring to human beings. Their industry, their frugality, their honesty, kindness and liberality made them distinguished famely among the early settlers of the county from the beginning, and as one by one of the oldest have been passing away, the younger ones still hold among the people the same high and honorable position of their fathers. Of the three brothers, who came originally from Ireland, the Hon. Michael Uriell alone survives passed the Devine lease, but still is in the enjoyment of vigorous health and activity, and as one of the first and early settlers of our county, he can look over a long life of noble actions on his part that have not only contributed alone to his happiness and prosperity in his declining years but to the happiness and prosperity of his neighbors as well, and as a public officer, and private citizens, he will leave behind him when he departs an honorable record. No less distinguished in private life was the subject of this sketch, who from his infancy to the end of his life displayed the same generous and noble traits of his ancestors in every way that went to make up the good citizen and the honest man. When a mere boy his father left him his homestead with a large tract of land and young as he was, he took hold of the inheritance, added to it from time to time until he soon became one of the most neatly and prosperous farmers in the county, and here for over half a century on the spot where he was born and raised, lived and toiled this noble decendant of an old and honorable race of men, who can trace their lineage back into the dim shadows of retreating ages. Often has the author of this in the dim long ago as a tired hunter from an exciting chase sought a shelter for the night in his father's cabin, only to hear in answer to the knock, "come in set your rifle in the corner there, glad to see you, make yourself at home with me as long as you choose" coming with a tone of expression that told me the words came from a generous heart and instead of mere formality, and often too when that old pioneer had been gathered to his fathers, did I find in the same cabin and around the same old hearthstone the same generous welcome, the same hospitality and the same noble traits of character in the son, and it was these traits of character that as the years have passed that have tide the old settlers of our county together in a bond of affection for each other, that nothing but time and death can sever. Some men, whether at home or abroad, will sometimes play discordant parts but Mr. James Uriell abroad was an intelligent gentleman, and for the many comers and goers his table was always spread with the richest the country afforded. and given with a tone and a gesture disarmed of formality, that always made one feel at home at his table. On October 6th, 1861 he was married to Miss Sarah Schulte who survives him, and who was a lady of culture and education, and was born in Garnavillo township where her father William Schulte was among the first settlers. This lady has made him one of the very best of wives, has shared with him in all his toils and labors, and contributed by her acts of kindness to make his home a happy one for their family as well as a generous hospitable mansion for the stranger. Seven children has blessed their union, all bright, intelligent and industrious, who have before them in life the noble examples and instructions of their parents to make their several ways through life as decendants of an ancestor, whose life was without a single stain. As a man who took a deep interest in all public affairs and improvements, he was extensively known throughout the county, and wherever known, he will be missed from among her best, and most prominent citizens and as one who has known him intimately from his birth, the author can say of him that he lived and died an honest man and neither nature nor its God could have asked from him a more completed, or a more successful life.
